BB changing formats is the only reason it's a success. American reality TV is still a reaction to Richard Hatch winning Survivor. We saw him make alliances and "break the game" so to speak and we concluded "this is how you win." On the flip side, we saw Kelly Wiglesworth battle with her emotions and be wishy-washy and we concluded "this is how you lose."
But even besides the cast and the format, as someone who actually sat through BB1 (one of the only ones on this forum I think?), the biggest mark against it was just how slow-paced it was. They alternated between nominations one week and evictions (excuse me, banishments) the next week, and when you're only getting rid of one person every two weeks of course the show is gonna drag quite a bit. They tried to speed up the endgame but it really wasn't enough to undo the damage.
