They aren't french though, they are fleeing war torn countries, and extreme poverty. Besides which, that is just the biggest cop out of all time, if we were the first country in Europe that these people reached, you wouldn't be insisting they stay here, you'd be cheerleading them on to other countries. For some context, france process around 130k Asylum applications every year, we had our highest year in 2019 of just under 40k. France are doing their bit.

Illegal immigrants don’t get any money from the state, they do get housed in detention centres though while their claims are being processed and if their claims are successful, they’d be eligible to the bare minimum assistance, about £5 a day, so the notion that they come here for the money is not only false, but it’s built on a smear intended to make the less well off or working class resentful that someone is getting something, that they’re not actually getting.

Then blame the countries that have borders with non-european countries (if they are to be blamed at all). The EU has people looking after those borders. France only has borders with european countries, so by the time they get there the job is done for the migrants.
Our mediterranean coast doesn't see much migrants, or any at all, Italy, Spain or Greece are closer.

but the people coming over in boats aren't doing that are they? they want to get into the UK system bypassing legitimate asylum routes. Everyone in this thread knows this, so I can't for the life of me understand why people are defending them

Neither can I when there are families in camps with elderly and very young kids that need rescuing, this is survival of the fittest hunger games style
