The first time you watch it, you probably won't understand what's happening, but then go find out what the plot is about and watch again from the perspective of knowing what's happening.

I'll tell you.

Spoiler:

The first hour and half of the film is not real, you're in and watching somebody's dream, but you don't know you are, unless you already knew, which you do now.

Then the person who's dream you're in, wakes up, and the last half hour explains the dream you was watching, but you don't know that, unless you already knew, which you do now.

But it's even far more complicated than that.

First time I watched it, I didn't get, but was intrigued by it, then I looked it up online and read a great piece explaining the whole plot of the film, then I watched it again and realised it's a work of genius.

It's sort of a cross between Sunset Boulevard and a very dark Wizard of Oz, which are favourite films of the guy who Directed it, David Lynch, he also directed Lost Highway.

Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire are called David Lynch's LA trilogy, although it's not a trilogy as such like Lord of the rings or The Godfather, they're different story's. I've seen Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, I've not seen Inland Empire.

It's a film that if you get it, it's a masterpiece, if you don't, you think what the hell was that rubbish all about?

It ranks number 28 in the sight and sound critics poll of the greatest films ever made. It also ranked number 1 in a 2016 BBC culture poll, of the greatest films made since the year 2000.

Maybe you've already seen it? If so give us your thoughts. If you've not seen it yet, but you do watch it, let me know what you think.

I think you need to have total understanding of what's going on in the film to realise that what Lynch did with that film was genius. Lynch is a very difficult director for most people to understand.
I've seen Mullholland Drive, I really liked it, a real mind bend. I only watched it one time though so I'd definitely be up for a re watch if we can get a link somewhere.

Spoiler:

It is definitely one that you'd view with different eyes the 2nd time round knowing what the ending was. If we do watch it as one of these films I'll do you a proper review then, it's not fresh enough in my mind to do one now but it was one of my favourites of these types films

Also, Alf I've just spoilered your explanation of what's going on in the film in case we do watch it and it spoils it for people

I did like watching it and got a bit obsessed with it as where the parents lived was on the same road i grew up in in Croydon and it was really weird seeing my old street on telly! but i got to ep4 and thought they're never going to wrap this up in one series...still a goood show though

What?? Spielberg's masterpiece and you've not seen it? Get out of this club, at once.

I've watched it about 10 times.

Luckily for you you've seen Mulholland Drive, so you can remain in the club.

...I’m easy whatever...I’ve seen them all except the Irishman...(...but never had any real leaning to watch it as no, gangster movies are not really my thing...)...I find some of the violence in them quite difficult...

I'm not against violent movies, Quentin Tarantino is one of my favourites, his stuff seems so gory it kind of lessens it though, if that makes sense?

...I can tolerate some violence but it’s also the context/content of the rest of the movie as well, if that makes sense...there has to be so much more to offer in the movie...maybe for me, ‘gangster’ is just too much violence because that was a huge part of gangster world...I did like the Untouchables, actually, though...

...Defiance would probably be the closest movie to something like Schindler’s List...so we could say that..?...I’ve only seen it once a long time ago but I recall it to be very good...and Liev Schreiber, one of my favourite actors...

Yep, happy with that choice

Thank you very much, however, I'm not on Netflix, I cancelled it earlier this year, and I don't have that film on Dvd.

I do have hundreds of films on dvd, and one time, you're bound to choose something I've got, so I'll join in on those occasions.

Great, I'll watch it over the weekend.

I watched Memento in chronological order as well

Spoiler:

It really does show how genius the original is though and just how much it puts you in Lenny's head rather than watching a straight forward movie about a guy with that condition.

I found I liked Natalie a bit more in this version, you could kind of understand a bit more why she was being an asshole to Lenny, clearly she knew he'd either killed or been an accessory to killing her boyfriend (even if he was a drug dealer) and she still did seem to feel sorry for Lenny even though she used him (but maybe she felt he owed her that revenge?

Also, the scene in the cafe with Natalie and she asks him to close his eyes and remember his wife, in some of those memories she looked stressed and upset and i wonder does that imply it was after the rape and therefore Teddy was telling the truth when he said Lenny had accidentally OD'd her? It's easier to notice that watching it chronologically because watching it backwards you don't know yet that she may have actually survived the attack.

I feel the conversation about her re reading that book had some significance as well or symbolism at least about repeating things.

So yeah watching it forwards made me end up with my original conclusion that Sammy did exist but that Lenny had somehow managed to train himself to believe that his own wife was Sammy's.

What I would like to know though is how they figured out that the killer was John G? Where did those names/initials come from?

Also, another observation, how quickly he believed Teddy about Jimmy being the one, he seemed to have just taken his word where as he was much more thorough when deciding Teddy was the one
