This incident is similar to one I heard of several years ago, before the end of the apartheid regime in South Africa where there was segregation and white minority rule. During that time there were calls for sanctions against South Africa, but Mrs Thatcher refused point blank to carry them out.

In this case, in the uk a supermarket checkout operator refused point blank to sell to a customer a grapefruit because it was from South Africa and she deeply believed that there should be a boycott of all South African goods.

Moving on to today and religion, I understand that in the medical profession there is a get out clause so professionals can opt out of abortion proceses on grounds of concience

I am wondering if this pharmacist believed they had the same rights here

Incidentally the story in full here

The pharmacist does have similar rights.

Quote:
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) said the pharmacist was acting within her rights.

The spokesman said:'While the Code of Ethics and Standards does not require a pharmacist to provide a service that is contrary to their religious or moral beliefs, any attempt by a pharmacist to impose their beliefs on a member of the public seeking their professional guidance, or a failure to have systems in place to advise of alternative sources for the service required, would be of great concern to the RPSGB and could form the basis of a complaint of professional misconduct
The only considerations are when denying to serve the woman, did the pharmacist give sufficient information about other times or places where the women could be served and have her prescription filled? Was the pharmacist imposing her religious belief on the woman?

I would suggest that the story is more about the woman involved than a story about religion..

arista, I wouldn't have made a new thread if I had known someone made one first.

This is obviously not the right profession for her, if she can't leave her religion at the door. It's her job to do this. She's getting paid for it. If she can't handle it, **** and let someone else do it who is more capable.

Yes and no.

Yes most people don't do everyithing their religions say they should or shouldn't, like most people I know are catholics and contraception is against the religion but most of them use it anyway.

But No because as It is against some religions beliefs, in her mind she is breaking her religions rules by handing over contraceptives.

So, you are therefore saying that people should just pick and chose which religious rules they should or should not follow?

I would say If it's against your religion then don't be a pharmacist

I was refused by the Catholic church to be my girl's sister's son's godparent. Her sister wanted us but I'm an aethiest - at the christening I just stood at the back of the church while my girl became godmum.

Religion suks - as if I'd not help the kid if anything untoward happened to his parents.

well, I am refering to this particular case, I know it is against Catholics rules to use contraception, I think Muslim also. Though it doesn't say what religion this lady was. Every topic involving religion doesn't have to be about christianity LT!

I know, I just thought it may be easier to state. I am however not sure what rules Christians have to adhere to apart from the the commandments.

I cant recall any regarding serving someone with contraceptives for pain relief?
