I don't give money to the homeless but I sometimes give some in a bar because when I used to be a bartender, the tips per weekend paid my cigs for the week. I was grateful for that so now I give it back because no, being a bartender isn't always fun

I round up to the nearest pound in taxis, unless I get one of the horrible moody drivers who makes you feel like you are putting him out by offering him business.
In restaurants, it depends on the service. I tend to just round up to the nearest fiver or tenner though, not a percentage. If the service is crap, you wont get an extra penny off me, and you can death stare me all the way out of the restaurant if you wish to, makes no difference to me. I dont give homeless people money. As I am a bit cynical and believe that most of the time they would spend it on alcohol or drugs. I actually knew someone who used to go sit on durham bridge on his days off his well paid job, with his dog, and make quite a bit off the gullible nice people who gave him cash. I buy them food instead. I actually bought a homeless bloke a kfc last night actually ![]() |

Taking orders and bringing food must be one of the most menial/easy tasks around and for some reason that is one which probably most people tip for.
That is bonkers |

The amount of people I have seen hold that opinion and try to do the job. They last a few days before being broken down. ![]() (I'm on about proper restaurants, 5* ones btw)

yes, mostly in the service industry which is why people tip.Yeah, no skill is needed (to a point, you can still have really good and really bad waiting staff!) I don't see why just because anyone "can do it" is a reason to not tip tbh yeah anyone can do it but alot won't do it and we need waiters and waitresses, in all likelihood if they weren't getting tips they'd probably be as well off on the dole

Going back to my rant, obviously if the service has been crap, then fair enough don't tip.
It's when you have served these people all night and gone out of your way to make sure they have an amazing evening and they leave nothing. It's ok though as where I used to work we remember the regular non-tippers and would give them the crap tables, and just give them the basic service. ![]() Another rule of thumb, is those that complain for no reason. If there is an actual problem, again fair enough, but for those who just like to complain for the sake of it I wouldn't; NEVER piss off the waiter or Chef. ![]()

I'd never do such a thing, there is other ways to annoy/get back at rude customers though.

I always tip as long as I have had friendly and good service, I have to say I rarely find I get bad service form anyone but I choose where I dine out carefully as being a Student some staff,I stress very few though, in Restaurants think they can make you wait longer or hold the view you will not tip them.

I understand that waiting staff are poorly paid, but I don't see why customers should be expected to subsidise their wages by tipping. I particularly hate restaurants where the service charge is already factored in. Tipping should be seen as a bonus, a reward for good service, not as a means for stingy employers to avoid paying a decent wage.
And what about shop staff who get no tips to supplement their lousy wages?

Bar staff aren't as badly paid as people think, definitely not where I've worked anyway. Actual bar staff were on about £7.50 an hour, supervisers on about £9 (what I was) and then managers on yearly salary. Then imagine time and a half or double pay for bank holidays etc and they don't come out with a bad wage at all.

Even on Christmas Day the place I worked for paid minimum wage and offered a £10 bonus if staff worked a minimum of 6 hours on Christmas day AND Boxing day! £10 is all they got (I refused to work for that day).
