The poppy represents servicemen and women who have died in all conflicts since WW1. It was adopted when swathes of red poppies bloomed on the battlefields where so many had died.
Muslims (not all, a tiny minority of demented extremists who are stuck in the dark ages) made a connection with the poppy when they decided to burn them. Also when they announced they plan to break the silence on Remembrance Day when people remember the people who died or who have been injured to give us the freedoms we enjoy now. |

Poppies have just become a way of showing off how self righteous a person is these days, It's less about showing respect towards soldiers and more about showing off how much you 'care' to everyone else as well as giving these people a sense of superiority. It's just very disengenuine to me now. People just wear them to look good and that's ruined the spirit of them for me.
I make a donation every year but I don't wear poppies, I pay my respects in my own way that's not dominated by a need to show off. |

Jon Snow summed it up best :
"I am begged to wear an Aids ribbon, a breast cancer ribbon, a Marie Curie flower... You name it, from the Red Cross to the RNIB, they send me stuff to wear to raise awareness, and I don't. "And in those terms, and those terms alone, I do not and will not wear a poppy. "Additionally there is a rather unpleasant breed of poppy fascism out there - 'He damned well must wear a poppy!'. "Well I do, in my private life, but I am not going to wear it or any other symbol on air." Of course I have no problem with them and all that but I am a little dubious of this whole American type furore of supporting 'our boys' in the army who have been put on a bit too much of a pedestal in my opinion. |

I was at the Cenotaph this year remembering someone close to me who's gone. Someone who served in the army. No one at the Cenotaph was feeling pleased with themselves because they'd dropped 50p into a poppy collector's box. No one there was indulging in "Our Boys" rhetoric. Most people had lost someone. I wish I could still revel in the ignorance that allows people to suggest people are "poppy nazis" because they think the country owes the military a debt of gratitude.

Does this stupid government give into every countries demand? I dont wear a Poppy but it should be an option for people of this country that want to remember the poor soldiers in the past.
And the muslims that are threatening to burn the Poppies are hypocrites because they hate anybody just mocking there ways, just look at the death threats the South Park writers got so they should shut there mouths.

Not strictly true, FIFA rules forbid the wearing of political religious or commercial messages on teams shirts. The poppy could be seen as both a political and religious message as its in Remembrance of Dead and Wounded servicemen. http://www.insideworldfootball.biz/w...gland-friendly A compromise was reached to allow English, Welsh and Scottish teams to affix a poppy to black armbands worn over the shirt sleeve, thereby getting round the FIFA ruling. If you noticed however coaching staff on the sidelines still wore the tops with a cloth poppy sewn on. This compromise was actually reportedly proposed by an MP who is also a qualified referee - Chris Heaton-Harris. http://www.insideworldfootball.biz/c...e-in-poppy-row Last edited by Shasown; 14-11-2011 at 02:18 AM. |

All the players wore them, on their track suits, on their training shirts and on their armbands. Some had poppies on their boots. During the match some armbends fell off when the velcro came unstuck, but they all started out wearing them.
