Tbh I think people know the risks when they engage in behaviour like this, if they get some kind of disease it's their own fault

This tbh.

If anyone isn't aware in this day and age of the risks of unprotected sex and drug use then there's nothing that can be done for them.

Never heard of this before.. just wear protection and make sure you don't let any fluids of an STD-infected person inside of you. Pretty simple really.

If only life was that simple.

Especially when it comes to these people possibly sharing needles.

I went for an STD test recently (I'm free of ailments before anyone starts ) and there is a particular part of the test that you have a throat swab with. The reason it's there is because people share things like straws when they're taking some drugs that you sniff. A lot of the stuff in things like Coke can actually cut your nose as it's going up so it's actually possible to catch an infection from someone if their blood touches yours.

i've never heard of a case where someone got HIV/AIDS from sharing a STRAW to snort powder... do you have any references for that??? I'm pretty sure it's just needles and sex...

You may not have heard of it but it is possible. It's the same as someone with infected blood putting an open cut on someone else's open cut. Blood goes on the straw from the drug cutting the inside of your nose and then the same straw is placed into someone else's nostril who also has a cut on the inside of the nose from sniffing the drugs.

well by that logic you can also say that anyone who plays contact sports, a rugby player who has any blood anywhere could technically transfer it to another player just by playing rugby, so really rugby is just as dangerous for getting HIV as sharing a rolled up dollar bill...

Let's try to keep things in perspective.

Yes, but who's more likely to be sharing bodily fluids/spreading diseases?

The rugby player with the small chance of having a cut, the small chance of him having an infection to start with and the small chance of his blood coming into contact with another player?

Or the frequent drug user who often has casual sex? Activities where they're not exactly going to be in the most rational frame of mind to be safe etc. It kind of speaks for itself.

That's like saying anyone can be burned by fire in their own home by matches or kitchen equipment. It's all the same chance. Well it isn't, that doesn't mean there aren't people, like firefighters, who obviously have a MUCH higher chance of this happening.

The firefighter who frequently takes drugs, has casual sex and plays rugby on the weekend though.

i wasn't talking about casual sex and needle drug use.. i was just comparing it to the using a straw up your nose drug use that he was claiming is risky behavior.

obviously anyone who shares needles and has unprotected sex is a million times more ub danger, but that wasn't what i was referring to, i was referring to the claim that sharing a straw to sniff drugs can give you aids, and i rightly pointed out that that is not really risky behavior.

I don't recall Rob specifying AIDS and HIV?

There are many other infections/diseases that are spread through sharing bodily fluids.

well you can get Herpes from drinking from the same cup...

But i assumed he was referring to the more serious of STDs.

so let's keep things in perspective.

Yeah, you can also get different forms of hepatitis either from sex or sharing drug paraphernalia. Who said it wasn't in perspective?

There are many serious STD's/diseases that aren't always HIV you know?

The lining of the nose is very thin, it's why they give kids flu innoculations nasally it is absorbed straight into the bloodstream.
The risk playing rugby? With the dirt and the sweat and the moisture and the fact your blood is flowing out of a wound not in....virtually non existent.
Which is why rugby players aren't in the group of those at risk.
