I think we got a chip done in Ireland for only 18 euros, you just need to shop around and look for the best deal

Well. My post that you initially replied to was me asking why people wouldn't want to have their dogs chipped and you offered not being able to afford it as a reason, now you've changed that to it not being important to them which is an entirely different reason

I didn't realise it was free now when I posted that., I haven't changed my view I have added to it, also it might be free now but when we moved house we had to pay 50.00 to update the details, so it might be "cheap" initially or free but there are added costs

Yes.

I don't think the cost is too bad, and free if you are hard up.

It was only Ł10 when I got my dog done, you can still get it done for around that between Ł10 and Ł20 anyway, some places I understand are having 'free' days for it too.
Its a one off thing so the price is really tiny when you think of the massive benefits to it.

One potential drawback here: if it's mandatory, people will hack their dog's chip out before they abandon it. Or they'll just kill it instead .

Having a pet is a big responsibility. It shocks me that everyone wouldn't automatically get their animal chipped.

Puppy farmers and importers should get a prison sentence, always. A long one. Make some examples...

I'd take that further; with things as they are at the moment, I don't think there's much justification for deliberately breeding domestic cats and dogs at all, or at least, there should be a licencing process with only a certain number of breeders allowed in an area. There are SO many animals being killed in shelters every day, if anyone really claims to be an animal lover and wants to give an animal a home, there are countless available to cater to all home situations.

All dogs should be micro chipped, and as LT said adoption is the way ,so many poor dogs the are in need of a loving home.

Interestingly, I've done a bit of googling and apparently there are some concerns about chipping and an increased risk of tumors in dogs? Don't know how extensive or reliable the research there is, but interesting nonetheless. Was also reading that it's actually not too hard to get your hands on the tech to blank / rewrite the information stored on the chip... so it's not actually a deterrent for professional "pedigree thieves".
