Compulsory indoctrination to unquestioning obedience of authority figures?

Is there a stronger word for "no"?

Life isn't like Suicide Squad, throwing criminals into armed service is just a bad idea all round.

Typically when people speak of bringing back National Service, I tend to think it's a case of them looking back with rose tinted glasses. I don't think it worked much back then and it certainly wouldn't work now as the world is a different place.

Wait, so they get to decide when they get a year of their life taken away from them for no possible reason?

Remember that time I was about to perform life-saving surgery, but I was asked to hang up second hand clothes in a charity shop instead so I didnt.

Yes....whats up with that?

You would obviously get tax benifits for the year off!

On the whole old people are more disrespectful than the young though? Especially to shop workers etc.

It's a massive waste of time, you're either forcing people to delay their lives (and potentially end/ruin them) with military service or with pointless busy work in the guise of charity. It's utterly pointless either way.

I was thinking 65-70 year olds should do the same if they missed out on the 18-25.

Military service would not bestow 'respect' (I'd say the phrase you are looking for is compliance) upon people today anymore than it did when National Service was a thing, which is to say, it didn't.

National Service was a waste of time and resources back then and it would be a waste of time and resources now.

Charity work for the right people in the right places would instill respect.

Tell me the actual benefits then, What is the benefits of wasting a year of someone's life in military service that they do not want or might not be suitable for (and could easily cause them harm or death) OR having them waste time working in a Charity shop when they could be in training or forging their own career?

There's no benefits to it. It's just a waste of time that's designed to punish the younger generations.

You can't see what's up with forcing people to give up a year of their lives to do something they probably don't want to do, or even worse, will not be able to handle it?

And it's a complete fantasy if you think that you could find enough placements in meaningful charity work for everyone who would be forced to do it. People would just end up in a charity shop for a year of their lives and they would have nothing to show for it.

But, that's an ambiguous term, so by charity work you mean what exactly?
