Well there is a reason, it's just a convoluted and not very good reason.

I suppose important not to conflate "reason" with "justification". I would agree that there's no justification for making the link or furthering it by posting tweets like the one in question. That's a different discussion though when it comes down to it... "Is there a link" vs "did he do anything wrong and thus is it fair to highlight that link". Yes to the first, no to the second .

No but one of the papers did that by accident (not just compared him, but mistakenly said it WAS him) and that was DEFINITELY a libel case .

The twitter hashtag is the semantic link in and of itself, the accuracy of it isn't relevant because I'm not defending or validating it as a genuine link other than pointing out how the topics are linked. I've already said they're unfairly linked. But things being unfairly linked doesn't ... unlink them... and me, you or anyone else knowing that the link is wrong doesn't erase the hashtag.

I remember that hashtag trending on twitter actually and as I went through it I was thoroughly unsurprised to see it full of angry bigots attacking him and his family for being wrong, unnatural and unethical, colour me shocked that transphobia so easily flows into open homophobia by the ‘we’re not bigots!’ crowd
