Niamh | Hands off my Brick!

So i watched the original last night, it honestly felt like it was a completely different film to the remake. The plot was a little bit more believable for it's time and Dalton seemed more like a 3 dimensional character in the original I thought. The original seemed more like a character/plot driven story to the remake where it felt more like the characters and plot line was there to accommodate the fight and actions scenes. The one thing I didn't love about the original was the female characters and how women were portrayed in it, very background, decorative, boob shot people. It was of it's time I suppose though.
Anyway, i'm not really sure which I preferred, like I said they felt like completely different films rather than an original and a remake, I liked them both for different reasons

![]() Tbf, I haven't watched either version, but I do like Jake Gyllenhaal, and I did like some of Patrick Swayze's Films.

Yes but as long as that's not the only purpose of the female characters in a film, but it was the 80's, I think film has gotten a lot better in recent years for fleshing out it's female characters, thankfully

I do think modern Media might want to tap into that market a little bit more than they currently are though, and I think they won't do it because they seem to be scared that they'll be seen as misogynistic by some people, if they have attractive women in Films, TV, and especially Video Games made in the West. Now that's not to say that there aren't attractive women in Entertainment, I mean straight away I can think of Rebecca Ferguson, Scarlett Johansson, Margot Robbie, and the Actress that plays Yennefer on The Witcher TV Series, but fiction that has those Actresses in them, aren't really playing on their attractiveness (which tbf is a good thing in some ways,) but it's the whole "averting the male gaze" arguments from Hollywood that I think pisses me off more than anything, because guys are still allowed to be sexualized, and according to Hollywood I would be seen as an "Incel" for pointing that particular hypocrisy out, which is absurd as I despise Incels, but I know that's the argument they'd make. But I do think that market research shows that a bit of shallow casting does help make a product more commercially successful. Like for example, not as many people would've watched Titanic if the two leads looked like Wayne Rooney & Susan Boyle (no offense intended for Susan Boyle, Rooney I'm still a little bitter at lol,) but that's my view on how that Film became a juggernaut success. Apologies for the rant, I had to get that off my chest.

That said there is and should be plenty of room for movies to "be sexy" without being exploitative. The issue there of course is that it's often going to come down to the skill level of the writers and director. |

Actually, I'm going to say I preferred the remake, that's probably an unpopular opinion but it was more fun and I enjoyed the fight scenes more

The new one is very different, you'd barely realise it was a remake if they said nothing and gave it a different name imo, you should give it a watch if you have prime and tell what you think

…I didn’t mind the remake, it was quite fun because it wasn’t a serious storyline …but I don’t recall lots of detail with the original…/…as in any differences …I do recall, though that the bar owner in the original was male…(…I think…)…and that changed to female for the remake…2024 has realised that WOMEN CAN BE BAR OWNERS TOO…not just be offered to have someone grope them in bars for $20….
