There have been lots of studies on this here un the UK. Making your name sound more Anglo saxons usually get you and interview in less time than you do if you have a foreign sounding name....
https://www.beapplied.com/post/whats...ore%20foreign. From the article: UK government, 2012 – an all parliamentary group study found that women from ethnic minorities who “whitened” their names or changed them to sound more Anglo-Saxon had to apply for half as many jobs to receive an interview invitation as those whose names sounded more foreign. · BBC’s Inside Out London, 2017 – even with a small sample size of two candidates and 100 job opportunities, this study reflected the same pattern of discrimination. While both candidates were equally qualified, “Adam” received 12 interview offers while “Mohamed” was only offered four.

Are white people being denied opportunities in black and Asian countries? Possibly, probably, who knows. Give us all the proof you have. ![]()

…I don’t know about surnames but I just found a site that lists some names and their origins…and it is specific to ‘black children chosen names…’…
…anyway, Dwight is listed as a chosen name for male black children…its origin/meaning…. Meaning: “Little and dark” Origin: Irish Cultural Significance: Represents the beauty and strength found in diversity. …its only one site, I’m aware…but its helpful for us to understand why a name might be looked at with discrimination if this case goes through the legal system etc… Last edited by Ammi; 15-07-2024 at 12:00 PM. |

I wouldn't have thought Dwight was a black sounding name either, like Oliver i would have pictured a white country guy, maybe it's with Jackson as a surname though?

Jackson is reliably found among the top twenty last names in the U.S.
According to WorldNames public profiler, the Jackson surname is found in the greatest numbers in the U.K. and Australia. It is most prevalent in northern England, especially Cumbria county. --------- There is no way you could prove that the recruiter thought "Dwight Jackson, oh yeah the guy must be black with that name and as a racist I will not give him an interview" crazy |

I mean, if everything he's said is correct (which I'm sure he'll have to back up in his law suit) I would say there's more evidence to say he's right and his name change made the difference. I don't know whether they thought he was black or whether they thought he was "white trash" but either way it's discrimination because of his name.

I'm not saying it isn't because of race though -- unfortunately it absolutely IS the reason a lot of the time. Just saying that it will probably be hard to prove without multiple examples of the same thing happening with different names. |

Are we saying this thread that if it happened once then OK but multiple time means its racist.
![]() BTW the name Dwight Jackson, to me, very much says black man. Especially in the USA. Google it and see what comes up.

If I was the recruiter, I would 100% think that Dwight Jackson is a black man... And then reject his application. ![]() But seriously, I would hazard a strong guess that Dwight Jackson is a black person if I were the recruiter.
