Unfortunately, your sources aren't great and we know how some forum members like to discredit any source that contradicts them. I like that LT's source actually backs up the arguments.

…anyway, Dwight is listed as a chosen name for male black children…its origin/meaning….

Meaning: “Little and dark”
Origin: Irish
Cultural Significance: Represents the beauty and strength found in diversity.


…its only one site, I’m aware…but its helpful for us to understand why a name might be looked at with discrimination if this case goes through the legal system etc…

It is a bit strange though that they did reject his CV multiple times until he changed his name. To me the name he chose sounds white/Polish and with stereotypes applied I would think that Polish people have a reputation for being hard working

I mean, if everything he's said is correct (which I'm sure he'll have to back up in his law suit) I would say there's more evidence to say he's right and his name change made the difference. I don't know whether they thought he was black or whether they thought he was "white trash" but either way it's discrimination because of his name.

I could accept it being coincidence (or a different recruiter) if he'd just done it twice. Multiple rejections with his real name and then interview the FIRST time using an alternative name seems like more than coincidence and assuming all other elements of the application were the same, it seems likely to be the name. Though I do agree with Niamh above - hard to prove the race element from one example, there might be another reason for the name-bias. Having been involved in recruitment... sadly, if it's all one recruiter it could be as simple as them personally not liking the name "Dwight", and arbitrarily rejecting.

I'm not saying it isn't because of race though -- unfortunately it absolutely IS the reason a lot of the time. Just saying that it will probably be hard to prove without multiple examples of the same thing happening with different names.

BTW the name Dwight Jackson, to me, very much says black man. Especially in the USA. Google it and see what comes up.

If I was the recruiter, I would 100% think that Dwight Jackson is a black man... And then reject his application.

But seriously, I would hazard a strong guess that Dwight Jackson is a black person if I were the recruiter.

It'd be like saying that someone called Ji Sung Park isn't Asian.
