Better service doesn't actually beget better tips

Diners love the power to bestow or withhold financial reward at their whim; servers, in turn, seem to be motivated by the idea that really excellent service could be rewarded by a monster gratuity. The trouble is, that's not actually how things pan out in practice. Michael Lynn, a professor at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, has spent his career researching tipping behaviors, and found that perceived service quality only accounts for two percent of the variation between tips. Two percent! It's probably not even enough to be picked up on by the server, much less cause a significant change in behaviour.

My family always tips; I don't. I pay what I owe them and leave. I'm not giving someone extra money for doing their job, they'll get what they deserve in their pay cheque at the end of the month.

I tip if the service was good. Of course, i'm not gonna tip if the service was crap

I think it's a nice thing to do. And tbh, if people don't tip I think they're just tight.

I only ever leave a tip now, if I have had good and non intrusive service. Otherwise I politely thank them on leaving but leave no tip.

I tip most of the time if the staff made you feel happy and appreciated. I appreciate how hard and stressful the job can be as I done it myself.

If I go and eat somewhere and the service is good I think it's only fair to tip, the waiter/waitress work their asses off and get minimum wage.

We went to Mexico when I was 14 (my aunts wedding) and I stayed in a room with my cousin and the woman who came to clean the rooms was so so sweet, she gave us extra towels and she would always try speaking to us even though she did struggle with english and she even went out of her way to tidy up after us, obviously two teenagers make a mess but she would hang stuff up and idk she was just so attentive so we left her all our Peso's we had left because we will never go to Mexico again soon anyway it was about 800 pesos which is probably Ģ25 and when we did she cried her eyes out and hugged us and said she was so thankful and the money was going towards her children etc.

I am in line with most on this thread, and always tip in restaurants when the meal and service has been good. If the waiter/waitress has been particularly pleasant and efficient I tend to leave a larger tip.

I do think, however, that LT is winding us all up to a degree in his mischievous way, because I do not believe that he is really the miserable old miser he would have us believe.

Isnīt tip money a taxable income?

In here itīs called drink money or service money, and itīs not a standard procedure.

On here a average waitress pay is 1 921 € per month apparently.

To add: Tipping isnīt a standard here and therefore people rarely give them. The people who do the service rarely ask for a tip too.

I have never tipped, but thatīs because i usually canīt afford to do so. And itīs because i have never been on a place where tipping is expected.

Once you can live with some waitress thinking you are a **** for not giving her money for no reason other than she was nice its easy to not leave a tip

you just have to punch through the storm to the other side, where it is sunny and you have more money

to me, someone who doesn't leave a tip at a restaurant, is like a guest at your house, if you cook for them, they don't bring any wine, they don't offer to help, they don't offer to wash afterwards,

it's just rude.

if you are being served you should be doing something to return the favor, and i'd rather pay a tip than do the dishes!

i always tip well. i actually get upset with my boyfriend when he doesn't.

It's nice to tip and it also doesn't matter if you don't. Who cares?
