And as a customer you have the choice to go elsewhere 'cause there's plenty of extremely high-end restaurants that don't live in the dark ages and appreciate your custom.
As long as you act respectably and are clean a restaurant shouldn't even have the right to dictate or even comment on what you wear.

the reason people remove hats (not worn so much nowadays sadly) was that if you're wearing a hat indoors, it suggests that you have someplace better to be (ie was deemed rude).

Like i said earlier, if i went into a restaraunt with, for example, my Dad who was going out for a meal for the first time after having had brain surgery and someone tried to tell him to take his hat off i would not be responsible for my actions.
It really makes me angry in this day and age that people still think they can run establishments where they can dictate what you have to wear to spend your money in there or even if you can even eat/drink in there if you happen to be a woman!

Which "high end" restaurants are you referring to, where they're okay with you rocking up in a baseball cap? I'm intrigued to know...

The restaurant has the right to impose a dress code. It's the same thing as some bars at resorts not wanting you in their bar without a shirt.

And trainers/sneakers? they've been around for ages, you still wont get into most decent nightclubs wearing them, places have a dress code for a reason.
