That's a shame. Some of the best stories are about anti-heroes. I think GoT is a bit more complex when it comes to its heroes and villains. Not black and white.

Portraying a rapist as anything but a villain would be beyond the pale on a scale of 1 to 10 for bad writing, it would be worse than the horrible Jon Snow and Daenarys relationship.

No, you're misunderstanding.

I'm talking about three dimensional characters, ones that are varying shades of grey, not goody two shoes and moustache twirling baddies. THAT is bad writing.
