"Will Smith just slapped the **** outta me!" will easily go down in history as one of the best reactions to getting slapped.

I see people are saying it was staged now, I doubt it though. What benefit would that be to Will Smith? He doesn't need any sort of publicity really

All hail the Moyesiah

No way it was staged imo, people always say that. Those were all clearly spontaneous and natural reactions - Jada obviously not happy about the joke, Chris being visibly shocked by the slap and Will's angry shouting afterwards
Stripping him of the Oscar would be stupid though |

Yeah I agree Matt, if it were some reality stars or B listers even I'd think maybe it was but Will Smith is a golden boy in Hollywood, he doesn't need any publicity especially the kind that might ruin his image

The only thing that would make me a LITTLE sus is if he now starts taking grittier/tougher roles ... then I'm totally going to be eyeballing it as a deliberate image change. Other than that he's built an entire career on being a happy/smiley/laid back character. It's a potential career-ender for those sorts of roles.

If it had just been the slap I'd have thought it maybe was staged but the exchange afterwards it's pretty clear what's happened. Messy, really. He was laughing but Jada looked annoyed (tbf I can appreciate why, now knowing why her hair is short) but he's obviously then seen that she's upset and decided to do something about it. Their odd marital issues are probably all wrapped up in there too, things under the surface.
Chris Rock was clearly a bit shaken afterwards. I saw that "Saw" movie he was in - he's not that good an actor outside of comedy roles, no way he was faking that. |

Difference is I don't actually think Ricky would have made a joke like that. He does go close to the bone but his jokes are better thought out than that. That one was just mean spirited and not even funny either

) but he's usually taking aim at their wealth/status/how seriously they take themselves etc... I can even see him taking the piss out of DELIBRATE style/image choice... but I don't think he'd comment on something that was a result of a medical condition. Like you *can* do it but you'd only ever do it with someone you know very well, and who you are very sure will find it funny. e.g. I have a friend who has Type 1 diabetes, I've known him forever (since long before he was even diagnosed) and we've ALWAYS made "diabetes related" jokes. But I wouldn't make the same jokes with a random aquaintance or co-worker .

Yeah people are making a lot of Will laughing at first but I don't think that means anything either, it probably took a few seconds for him to register what Cris had said, in these situations people sometimes are just in "laugh mode" because its what you're supposed to be doing

The Smith Clan are pretty easy targets to take the piss out of - Will and Jada named their kids Willow and Jaden
it's funny how they tried to be a Hollywood Family when Will's the only one with any talent

Agreed, a woman shaving her head (for whatever reason) just isn't funny, any more than a man having long hair is.
I can't agree with the violent reaction per se, but good on him for standing up for his wife's condition. |

The Smith's are a bore for the most part now. Yes Will carries most of the talent, but Jada wasn't a bad actress many moon's ago. Also Jaden was a good child actor. He was pretty good In the Pursuit of Happiness, and decent enough in The Karate Kid remake. As for Willow, i remember she had that annoying whipping hair song about 10 years ago, not sure if she's done anything since.

I don't think we need to go there, it's enough of a story on its own without adding hypotheticals and imagined reverse racism to it

What on earth has that got to do with anything, once again you're making this into something it ISN'T.
But what I will say is if a comedian from across the pond made the same joke re : Will Smith's wife ie Ricky Gervais ,then I think more people would dislike the comedian. As I've noticed Americans look after their own ,but when a British comedian goes over there and pokes fun / makes risque jokes, then it's frowned upon alot more .And they seem to resent it. |

From what I understand of how it works in America... unless it's caused serious injury, it's up to the victim whether or not to pursue charges with the police, if they don't want to pursue it then the police won't pursue it. In the UK the police can decide to pursue it whether the victim wants to or not. Have to say in this case I doubt they would though, due to no injury being caused and there being a provokation. (That's not an excuse for getting violent but it would make a difference here, a totally unprovoked assault is always going to be concerning to the police).
