I cannot see a young urban/pop artist taking advice from a 60 year old woman. It's unimportant that Cheryl didn't know an old Elton John song from 35 years ago. The important thing is she understood what is current TODAY.

It's important a judge has a good understanding about a range of music.

The Elton John reference was an example that she knows very little outside of autotuned pop.

This will become more noticeable in the USA when she is faced with a broader range of music which is very popular over there and rarely seen here.

The oldie judges often don't have a clue about modern day or recent artists. I'd say thats far more of a worry considering theyre actually trying to find a CURRENT artist. Theyre not searching for a 70s tribute act.
I refer you to my other post.

It wasn't that she should know everything, but she knows extremely little outside of Girls Aloud's genre of music.
Take the current American Idol finalists, country singers and imagine Cheryl coaching them.

how do you know? Anyways all judges have their musical preferences. Just because youre not into country doesnt mean you can't still choose a song that suits their voice. Sometimes its good to take them outside the box.

Your logic applies to all judges on all talent shows. They could all be considered unsuitable to mentor or judge certain genres of music. But its not always relevant.

Musical preferences? Yes, but they at least know what they're talking about or dealing with when it comes to artists that differ from their own likes.

And taking them outside the box? I assume you mean make the artist something that the judge likes better, making them something completely different to who they are. Yet another manufactured popstar.

And how do I know?
Uh, because Cheryl's been on X Factor for the past three years and proven it.

Not so. I think she lead the panel towards a deeper understanding and appreciation of urban pop. That's why Simon was wittering on about 'the future' in regard to Cher Lloyd (and actually he got that wrong - he should have said 'the present') so he could keep up with Cheryl.

You have to have someone with a current knowledge of contemporary pop - not be a pop historian (and if you want that, you have Louis, and to a lesser extent, Barlow).

I'm not talking about someone with historic knowledge, but a broader knowledge when it comes to classic influences, genres etc.

Proof of this is the fact Cheryl is never given any acts outside of her age bracket and pop capability.

Patrick your posts can come across as slightly rude at times; I understand you are just trying to say what you believe, and it may be in good humour but they all seem abit 'rant like' and aggresive. I thought you said recently when you returned you would have a calmer approach?

Anyway... I suppose it could be worse, it could of been someone who was ugly and knew nothing.

Lol, exactly.

Take the American Idol finalists. Imagine Cheryl's comments...

"Lovely hair, pet. You're like the next Joe McElderry". Cue tumbleweed.

Look, Tulisa release crappy mainstream urban slime, she clearly has no taste in music. The fact she is related to Dappy should've made the producers think

TBH I'm glad, it will kill TXF, go Tulisa, guest judge Dappy!

This is great. Simon taking over TV here and across the pond. Then in what swipe he wipes the empire out. Woohoo, let's get back to good television.

Fox have already done a massacre on a lot of their shows to make several slots available for this steaming pile.

I'll probably end up giving it a watch though, lol. But definitely won't bother with the UK one. They've been killing it with the live audience auditions as it is.

Danni was always the best judge imo.
But what would N-Dubz know about music?

Dannii will be missed greatly, I liked her straight talking and how she contrasted positives with the negatives of a performance, she knew what she was talking about and kept to the point too.
