It should be made legal, doing so will take away the profit from pimps and gangs and regulations can be put in place to make it safe for it's workers and that nobody is forced into it. If you make it legal you can control it and tax it.

They HAVE to hide behind modelling / dating / escort agencies: because it's illegal. They wouldn't have to if it was made legal. I'm not sure how you can't see that.

For me, this again is one of the sensible approaches to what is the oldest profession in the world.

Let's be honest here: there are plenty of (men) and women who are quite happy to infrequently 'date' a man who takes them out for nice meals, takes them an odd trip away and the sleep with them. That's not a whole world away from a form of prostitution. (a different slant albeit) - they may not be taking money in the currency form but they are benefitting from someone else's money paying.

If you make it legal, you give the power back to the women who are ultimately the ones who provide the service. The tour guide who took us round Amsterdam said that Amsterdam had something like only 300 people known to be drug addicts in the city, out of a population of nearly 800,000 people. The UK on the other hand has a huge drug problem, and it's linked to prostitution. If you legalise prostitution, regulate it and improve the conditions they have to work in, not only do you provide a safer atmosphere but you even get tourism from it - how many people do you know of or have heard of that go to Amsterdam for such adventures? It's quite a common thing. It's a controversial topic but you have to accept that prostitution will always exist because some people will do anything for sex. And it's not always horrific looking people who can't get it anywhere else - you get tourists wanting the experience, you get people who want the fetish idea of it, you get people who want to do things that other women won't do. Some men don't want to spend like £50 on taking a girl out on a date hoping that it might lead to sex, some would rather just pay for sex. There are so many reasons why people do it. I can list off so many benefits behind the idea and I'm sure there are just as many for why it's not a good idea, but I'm for legalising prostitution.

I agree Greg. There is a totally different attitude to prostitution in Amsterdam and it's a completely different approach. People actually want to venture into the red light district over there. I would even go so far as to say it was a tourist attraction for some. It is not a no-go area at all. Just watch out for the blue lights....

I thought about this before hypothetically, and probably homelessness is one of the few things that would push me toward prostitution. I've heard life on the streets is truly awful, loads are alcoholics and drug addicts and there's a chance being beaten and raped if you fall in with the wrong crowd.

So I guess having sex with strangers wouldn't seem as bad confronted with that alternative.

But I think part of my soul would die, and it'd be difficult enough being close to people I don't know, let alone have sex.

I do think you would have to be a certain type of person to really detach yourself - and I totally get the comment about 'losing a bit of your soul'. but again: if it was legalised: that stigma would eventually die out.

Look at how 'promiscious' people are these days compared to even as little as 20/30 years ago (well you can't since you are so young) -but sleeping around and having god knows how many sexual partners before settling down is regarded as 'acceptable' these days by many. I'm sure if it was legalised, controlled - that perceptions would eventually differ and it be regarded as less sleazy that it is currently.

it may be less to do with lack of aspirations and more to do with the desperation to survive - I know that sounds lame but that is true for some that are in that situation I'm sure.

I do think it's the type of profession that does come with far too much stigma attached to it: due to those who do go down that line for drugs etc. That's the very sad part to it - but there is that in many aspects of life too.
