Macron seems to have lost the plot completely now. He wants to deny unvaccinated people access to just about anything

"I won't send [unvaccinated people] to prison," he said. "So we need to tell them, from 15 January, you will no longer be able to go to the restaurant. You will no longer be able to go for a coffee, you will no longer be able to go to the theatre. You will no longer be able to go to the cinema."

Netherlands: outbreak team says lockdown extension likely, retailers angered

Due to uncertainties about the "important characteristics" of the Omicron variant, the Outbreak Management Team (OMT) is not in favor of a quick relation of Covid-19 measures, apart from reopening schools. For the time being, the experts estimated that "further room to relax measures is expected at the end of January." By then, the booster campaign should have been completed and the hope is that the virus spread will decrease sufficiently. The OMT will discuss the decision further on Friday.

Business owners were frustrated by the advice of the OMT. Some entrepreneurs said that Cabinet should end public appearances by the OMT. "You create much unrest. Entrepreneurs are going crazy," director of the retail stores association INretial Jan Meerman told De Telegraaf.

Shopkeepers were angered that the Cabinet seemed to act solely on the wish of the OMT and did not hear the needs of the business owners. "It's crazy that we are the only country in lockdown," chair of the hospitality union Robin Willemsen said.

The OMT had various calculations for different scenarios. When primary and secondary schools reopen on Monday, it is expected to trigger a "wave of infections" peaking at the end of January or early February. According to OMT, the hospital admissions resulting from the wave could remain relatively limited. The number of patients in the ICU could rise to a maximum of 620 Covid-19 patients. Now there are 475 people with Covid-19 in the ICUs.

The OMT said a significant degree of uncertainty remains around these factors. For example, it is not yet clear how contagious Omicron is, how likely the chance is to end up in hospital and how effective vaccines are.

Preliminary research from the United Kingdom showed that Omicron spreads more rapidly than the Delta variant but leads to fewer hospital admissions. Although Omicron appears to be milder than delta, there is still a risk it could overload the healthcare system, the OMT said.

Furthermore, it appears that vaccines are less effective against Omicron than against the earlier virus variants. In their latest advice, the OMT cited British research that a booster shot would offer 65 to 75 percent protection against infection with symptoms. Yet, according to the preliminary British figures, after ten weeks, that effectiveness has decreased to 40 to 50 percent. After a booster shot, people are 80 to 90 percent protected against hospitalization. How long the protection will be maintained will have become clear in further research

i don't think i can get long covid with omicron variant for that particular reason, how it attacks the throat more, aw throatache is something what i had quite often already when i have a cold

also think it has same mild symptoms at unvaccinated with that variant, given they tested it on animals too, and those results were a match, more aimed at throat, rather than damage at the lungs

so i've read

The virus taking root in the throat and upper respiratory system matches up with the spread, too. Because it’s not going “deeper” into the respiratory system, it has a shorter incubation period, and also, because the virus is most active in the upper parts it spreads more easily through just breathing, rather than coughing.

So they all go hand in hand really. Short incubation = virus roots in upper airways = faster spread + milder symptoms (as the severe symptoms are damage to the lungs and other organs/pneumonia).

Long Covid is at least partially thought to be neurological damage + damage to the heart etc. which should occur much less frequently in mild illness.

Of course, you can get PVFS (post-viral fatigue) from ANY virus (e.g. it’s very common after glandular fever) and general PVFS symptoms could easily be thought to be “long Covid”.

I’m not at all surprised ... schools are nowhere near as safe as the government claim or the public believe .

The Chicago school’s chief seems perplexed at the decision to not return .

Check out the last sentence of the second photo .... so reassuring !!

“ we are ‘starting’ to deliver ‘some’ of the N95 masks that we have ‘ordered’ .. “

Nicola Sturgeon spouting on LIVE tv as we speak ..

Typical political take on things

She claimed that false POSITIVE lateral flow tests account for only 3 in 10,000. ...

I’m more concerned with all the NEGATIVE lateral flow test results given they’re wildly unreliable at around 40% accurate according to one study as I recall

the lateral flow tests indicate if you are infectious for covid, in that they are very accurate

So what happened last year when it was reported that they were only 38% accurate ??

Wasn’t it a Liverpool clinic or university?

people are confusing things. A PCR test will indicate a positive for covid months after you have had it, but you are only infectious for a few days so it doesn't matter. The lateral flow test measures viral load and is very accurate at identifying when a person is infectious Someone could have caught covid a few days prior to that, but if they are not infectious they are no danger to anyone else. That is the purpose of a lateral flow test

Not necessarily true, you can register negative PCR results within days of symptomatic recovery. You would have to in order to travel if, for example, you were abroad and caught Covid and had to self-isolate. You can't travel until you're tested negative multiple times (PCR). Most people it's a week or so max after symptoms end.

Interesting..

So all the millions of LF tests being done on schools this week are worthwhile then ??

Iirc that 'Liverpool pilot' was over a year ago now in 2020 and most studies more recently have shown LFTs are very accurate at identifying infection and are particularly accurate at showing positives when you are at your most infectious
