It appears that Southgate is just a lucky manager .. sadly not lucky enough to actually win anything though

3 times today i have heard people on Talksport say how Pickford was "brilliant" in the shoot-out

he made one save from a dreadful penalty that was hit straight at him and missed all the other ones - one as a dolly straight down the middle

bollocks

Yeah I am a bit baffled why everyone keeps focusing on Pickford being a hero haha

Presumably the same people who claimed that we played well and it was a massive improvement

Pickford was great in my opinion. But man of the match was saka without a doubt. The man is brilliant!

Was a tad drunk last night....but did I really see Ivan Toney, take a blind penalty in a quarter final of a euro championship. Now that itself deserves some ball grabbing.

England are not in the semis because of Safegate

They are there in spite of him

Notice England only start to play football when they go down a goal and then they forget about the "tactics" and rely on their own skills and knowledge of football

Agree, when they throw GS tactics out the window, they finally look like a team.

We all knew that england had a fantastic squad going into this tournament and it has shown through. Every single player is capable of a game changing moment of brilliance.

They went behind in the last 2 games. Both times, they then forgot entirely about tactic and played for their individual pride and thats why they won. They were never in danger of losing that penalty shoot out yesterday

Southgate has built the culture of players being able to handle the big moments and show resilience when going behind or facing adversity

We are no longer the team of bottlers that we used to be

Southgate has built the players resilience has he?

Maybe they get it from playing for some of the biggest and most successful clubs in the world.

Didn't seem to do it for the previous golden generation

People can criticise his tactics all they want but there's no denying that the teams mentality is brilliant under Gareth

The previous golden generation were at least 10 or 15 years ago. If we're going back then why not go back to 66. There weren't 20 year old Champions league winners in the last golden generation. There are 6 champions league winners in the current squad. Thats got nothing to do with GS, thats why the mentality is better

England have equalised in the last two games with two of the best goals of the tournament.

It hasnt been thru teamplay, pressing the opponents etc its the brilliance of the players that have won the games not the managers tactics.

I want England to win the tournament obviously but when the players are unable to score a great goal the exit is gonna look so lacklustre that I cant see much support for GS. Finally we'll et rid of him

I think you think too much and expect to much of us. And you underestimate every other nation.

International football isn't the same as league football. You're playing against the best 11 players of each country. And they're good players who know how to compete. It's tough.

We have never been close to being one of the best technical sides. English style has never been that way.

Some of the teams you come up against at this level can keep the ball and starve you of possession if you let them have the ball easily. I think that's the thinking behind Southgates tactics. Try and starve your opponents of possession so it lesens the damage they can do to you.

Also, a lot of team's we've come up against so far see England as a big football nation, that alone makes them raise their game and they also get men behind the ball to make it hard for us to break them down.

Maybe a team like Holland (certainly Spain or France) will play more open and give our players a bit more space in behind and we'll see a better spectacle.

Agree with most of this but I dont think England have inferior players to other nations. I think the manager is holding the team back not pushing it forward.

I want him to step up, in games, or step down as manager.

Spain have played some really nice football in this tournament, so have the netherlands to be fair, but those type of teams never really end up winning the tournament

cocky england

i think it'll be a close call result though

if only we play entire game like we played second half last night

i'd bench Depay, and play Weghorst from beginning

and i'd bench Bergwijn, and play Malen

I think Southgate has created a unique environment for the players compared to previous generations that has helped the team be successful. Maybe his lack of tactical complexity has led to players from different teams finding it easier to play together. The fan base may not like the playing style, but no-one can argue that it hasn't been successful

It depends on how you define success.

A squad with 6 ECL winners should be competitive without an elite manager.
