Arrow Jade Goody website 'troll' from Manchester jailed

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england...ester-11650593
Quote:
An "internet troll" who posted obscene messages on Facebook sites set up in memory of dead people has been jailed.

Colm Coss, of Ardwick, Manchester, posted on a memorial page for Big Brother star Jade Goody and a tribute site to John Paul Massey, a Liverpool boy mauled to death by a dog.

The 36-year-old "preyed on bereaved families" for his "own pleasure", Manchester Magistrates Court heard.

He was jailed for 18 weeks for sending "malicious communications".
I'm pleased that such people are being prosecuted and convicted .....

A bit extreme...but good that they made an example of them. Maybe others will think and not be so sick in the future.

Oh I just re-read, the thing about the boy mauled to death by a dog is a bit sick. Fair enough then really.

He didn't post videos of that.

The child was mauled to death by a dog.

He posted nasty things on his tribute page.

I'm not condoning his behaviour, but surely they could have moderated the comments on the site or had them approved before they appeared.

Everyone knows there are trolls online. I'd rather just not let them comment than pursue court action to be honest.

I think the sentence is a bit extreme for the crime.

He was charged under the Communications Act 2003, for sending malicious communications that were grossly offensive.
It's a bit harsh to jail someone for that.

If you looked around the web, you'd find thousands of obscene and inappropriate comments about high profile deaths. Is everyone going to be charged?

No, but anything posted on the internet can be used as evidence against the poster - it doesn't have to be an obscenity, it could be libel, for example .....

Meanwhile, real criminals are getting away with murder, quite literally. The police moan that they're short staffed and low of resources yet they waste a load of resources processing this and then the Crown Prosecution Service have no option but to deal with it properly and then it wastes prison resources too which is already overcrowded

A fine or internet ban would have sufficed

Not to make an example, though, 'pour encourager les autres' .....

Making an example, especially over the internet, never works. If it did work then noone would be illegally downloading because people have been fined millions for it yet it still happens. Just putting this into perspective, I was in Manchester Crown Court not so long ago doing some court observations for my Open Uni course and one of the judges (she was lovely) came and spoke to a few students who were in. She was being brutally honest and saying that the courts are made a mockery of because of the police and the prison system. But she told us about another judge who gave a defendent in the crown court (which often shares the same judges as the magistrates court this person was trialled at because they're in the same building) a caution for RAPE. Now compare that to someone being an internet troll and saying who deserves prison more.

Anyone who finds humour in the terrible death or abuse of a child in particular has to have a screw loose and to purposely go onto this childs memorial site and spout profanaties deserves everything he gets, the families suffer enough,Why can't this moron find something constructive to do with his time.I'm glad he has been caught and dealt with.

Each case on it merits ..... and the irregularities of legal systems are well-known, but better some law than none at all .....
