In your career or job, do you undertake it for the money or the job satisfaction?
I know you can have both, but primarily, what makes you want to carry on that job? Would you rather be in a job you detest but pays a nice salary or in a job that you really enjoy, but doesn't pay overly-well. It was that panda thread that Nate posted earlier that got me thinking about this. That job the man does with those baby panda's must be so satisfying and rewarding. But some people prefer to be in jobs they cannot stand because the money is good.

Job sastifaction without a doubt. Money is great but if you're miserable doing what you're doing then it's not worth it.

Let's say that I study hard and I've been working hard every holidays since the age of 15 to achieve my goals and have great references for a future job.
I've been raised in the idea that no matter what I do, I must be comfortable with what I'm doing and once I've chosen my way, I'll not go back and I must work my ass off to be the most successful as I could possibly be. Money is one piece of something bigger. I'm lucky enough to study what I enjoy the most in life and to work in companies I wanted to so I already tasted what job satisfaction feels like. As for money, I'll get some because I've worked too hard and made enough sacrifices. I know it will come along with job satisfaction. ![]()

I dont know really. I wouldnt do a job with crap pay because I enjoy it when I could be earning a lot more, although I wouldnt like to be doing something I hate even if it pays really well.
Primarily, any job I do needs a decent wage, so I suppose money although job satisfaction is very important as well |

A mixture of the two, but I am pretty ruthless when it comes to money anyway. But I'm lucky enough to not need to work at this moment in time, anything I do is just CV building and a bit of extra cash really. But I do anyway, a bit sporadic though atm.
My ultimate goal is to work in Sports Rehabilitation. Office jobs bore the life out of me which is what put me off wanting to be a forensic psychologist, and I want a kind of job you can leave at work and when you go home, thats your time. But my overall ethos is never work for anything under Ł17k and never work for a fast food chain or a store with a working class demographic.

It's a mixture for me really. I must admit, I do like having money in my pocket, but then again who doesn't. My job at the moment gives me about 40 pounds a week, which is quite good for a 15 year old I suppose. I enjoy my job a lot, working on the till at a coffee shop and making coffee's. I know it sounds quite silly but it's my first job so its more novelty than anything, saying that I've been working there over a year now. The main part of my job is talking to customers which is always quite nice.
Thinking about it realistically though, as much as I love my job I would much rather do something that was maybe a little bit boring but payed 4 times as much. Perhaps when I get older my feelings will change. Last edited by Lewis.; 07-12-2010 at 09:37 PM. |

I think it's good to be happy in a job you're doing knowing your abilities are being applied. Money is nice too. Spending your free time and wages wisely is possibly the most important though.

That's Life
|
Personally, I'd prefer to work for money and have low job satisfaction. I have no real passions in life that drive me to want to do anything, so I get most of my kicks from stuff that costs money (TVs, computer games, live music, traveling, eating/nights out etc.)
In order to do those things in my free time, I'm obviously gonna need a job that pays well, and the benefits outweigh the boring work imo. However, I can see how people who have a real interest in something would prefer to have a high job satisfaction over money. My mum, for example, loves cats. On Saturdays she used to go and work for the Cats Protection feeding and housing Kittens. All of this was obviously unpaid charity work, but she really enjoyed doing it and I'm sure, if they offered her the least amount of money possible to survive and support me and my sister, she'd do that full time than work for double the money doing something she hated. The only thing that I enjoy at studying at college is business really so this, merged with my interest in culture, is the reason why I've decided to study International Business Management at uni. Hopefully this can take me into a job that pays relatively well that I enjoy, giving me both, a decent level of pay and decent job satisfaction.

I think because I experienced what doing something I really didn't when I studied nursing for a year was like,I would never do something I dislike. Although nursing is crap money anyways but still,no money is worth feeling horrible for most of the day.

Nowadays you don't get anywhere without money, so often getting a real satisfying job is only a plus when you are lucky.
Of course everyone will try to find a job that covers up fun and money, but I think most will go for money if they are realistic. I was lucky, I work 22 years for the same company already. It's a very stressing, but satisfying and creative job where I also earn a good amount of money

I am lucky enough to love the job I do as I know a lot of people don't have that privilage but money is important too because being able to get by financially etc has enabled me to do that job. Both are important to create a balance if you can and its good to aim for a fulfilling job when you are young, before you have financial commitments that can influence your decisions. Hope that makes sense lol

I left my last position because I hated it for a variety of reasons and was on a very good salary. No other reason for leaving...I simply loathed the whole chibang - the job, the people, the ethos, the shoddy practice, the unprofessionalism.
I was lucky and found a position with (surprisingly) a better salary, more responsibilities, more pressure but oddly enough: I love the job, and more importantly I love those I work with - it's hugely important to be happy in your work. |

The fact that a big chunk of your life is spent working job satisfaction is vital unless you want a shorter life brought on by being in a job you dislike and the inevitable long term stress that would entail.
Doing a job you dont like with good money is ok in short bursts but as a life time style should be avoided if possible....... Sadly many people have to spend a lifetime in a miserable unahappy job. In my mid twenties I changed from well paid work I hated to lower paid work I loved......I have no regrets........It's very much a personal decision for those lucky enough to be able to choose...... |
