"The producer of one of ITV1's best-known crime dramas, Midsomer Murders, has been suspended from his job after he suggested in an interview that there was no place in the programme for ethnic minorities and it was the 'last bastion of Englishness'. " Yes the producer has said it the wrong way Its sold worldwide. I am sure the new series will have non whites. |

Pretty tactless thing to say, he might have a point in that most rural English villages are predominantly white, but it's stupid to deny any ethnic minorities a role in the show

well shows have a right to cast whichever actors are appropriate for the roles. If the show is set in a place where there would not be any ethnic minorities then they have a right to not cast ethnic minorities. To say otherwise just goes against the whole principle of role casting.
but he maybe should have been more tactful with his wording. |

at risk of pandering to clichés I would say most rural villages / towns are heavily white. Even here in Torquay, I can't say I notice much diversity (our biggest other nationality is Polish, I think). So I'd say it's pretty accurate to have an all-white cast.
Besides, pretty much every character is killed off anyway so what does it matter

just like many gritty urban dramas deliberately cast ethnics to portray a hard hitting innercity slab of modern life, MM has a right to portray a more white, middle-class slab of life. I don't watch it btw. |

I think he meant a very undiluted tea n crumpets n cricket (n murder) Englishness. Which, I think, is the vibe the show goes for. |

Midsomer Murders co-creator to step down at end of current series
'Brian True-May had been reinstated by TV company after apologising for saying show was 'last bastion of Englishness' Very Clever of ITV so the big mouth producer finishes off this current series then leaves. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011...ue-may-english |

I don't watch the series.......However if a series is set in the past and in that past and type of location there were no ethnic minorities then the producers have every right to keep it historically accurate.......They also have the right to say why without being censored by political correctness freaks.......
