Default Disappointment for Channel 5 as viewers switch off in their thousands

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...witch-off.html

Quote:
It was always going to be difficult to repackage former Channel 4 reality show Big Brother for a Channel 5 audience.
But it seems the channel, and media mogul Richard Desmond, have been left disappointed with viewing figures for the show, after ratings dropped below a million viewers for the first time since its launch on Channel 4 in 2000.
Following the celebrity version this summer, which saw Paddy Doherty triumph as the winner, Channel 5 drew in a relatively impressive three million on the show's opening night.

Disappointment: Viewers are turning Channel 5's Big Brother, hosted by Brian Dowling, off in their thousands
Figures eventually settled at around 1.4m, before an abysmal 900,000 viewers watched last weekend.

Failing: A peak of 1.79million tuned in to see Rebeckah Vaughn evicted on Friday
Before that, the smallest audience ever recorded throughout the 11 series was 1.5m in 2009.
In addition, last Friday night's eviction show, the second of the series, lost more than 300,000 viewers.
It attracted just 1.4million during the hour-long show on Channel 5, with a peak of 1.79million as Rebeckah Vaughan was evicted.
The figures are in comparison to last week's average of 1.82million, with a peak of 2.1million according to Barb figures.
Big Brother was beaten by The Million Pound Drop Live, hosted by Davina McCall on Channel 4.
A spokeswoman for Channel 5 declined to comment.
It is believed Channel 5 signed a five-year deal with Endemol for the rights to Big Brother earlier this year.
The show had been axed by Channel 4 in 2010 after a huge drop in ratings.
Channel 4's director of television Kevin Lygo said at the time: 'Big Brother is still profitable for Channel 4 despite its reduced popularity and there could have been the option to renew it on more favourable terms.
'That's what a purely commercial broadcaster would have done, but Channel 4 has a public remit to champion new forms of creativity.
'That remit to push the boundaries has been an essential part of the weird chemistry behind Big Brother's success, but it's now what is telling us that the programme has reached a natural end point on Channel 4 and it's time to move on.'

this is bad news

Been saying this from the start... BAD choice of HM's, too similar, not enough variety in types, ages, experience, background = boring

All that is left really is a bit of eye candy, even from the start there was nobody I was going to relate too, I think that is the same for a great many 'potential' viewers. That bunch are only going to apeal to a tiny minority. CBB was worth watching, its the only reason I've gave this year a chance but I'm bored with these kids already.

I don't think the live feed would improve things much with this bunch, but it would at least stop the obvious directorial bias and endless discussions about what might or might not have happened that we where not shown.

I agree that the live feed is the only thing that can save BB. The only thing that makes BB special is the live feed.

I agree too. I dont mean to beat a dead horse but, theres really no way they can properly present these storylines into the show if we dont get to see what leads up to the situations. Its causing alot of confusion for the fans. For example the other night Jay and Maisie are cuddled up in bed together after lights out then 1 day later Aaron and Maisie are kissing in bed. Without seeing any lead up it makes Maisie look like shes jumping from guy to guy which by watching the HL show we see thats not true. They either have to break down and put on some type of livefeed or, lengthen the HL show to fit in all the storylines or only put 5 or so HMs in the house so they can properly follow whats going on and keep us informed a little better.

Passed caring about how the ratings are doing now, this series is brilliant regardless.

Can't wait to see all the anti-Big Brother comments in the DM's comment box in a few hours.
Honestly though, we all knew this. While an average of around 1.4m is bad for Big Brother and bad compared to the price they paid for it, it's still ok for Channel 5. The worrying things to me are:
1) C5 are managing to get programmes nowadays which pull in at least 1m fairly regularly and are only a fraction of the price they pay for BB
2) ^ because of that, will they not bother renewing the contract once the two year deal is over?

I'm sure BB is still profitable for C5 because of the voting and the sponsors and ads but I know they were expecting more.
Oh, and, I know everyone on here will hate me for this but I don't think them giving us a live feed would improve the ratings at all, I just don't see it.

I am wayyyyyyy past caring if it is doing well or not. They didn't take what the fans wanted into consideration so it is C5's loss now. A little thing like live feed would have had me giving this BB a go at least regardless of the calibre of housemates, no live feed alone decided me against watching it.

What do they expect with the HMs consisting of the "Wine me, dine me, 69 me" brigade?

What more can Big Brother do? it's been going for years, people don't watch because they have seen it sooo many times. Every tv show has a shelf life, and BB is getting past it's sell by date!

Theirs nothing different or new they could do which would make alot of difference. However Channel 5 have a 5 year contract with the show, and I sense that they may stick with it!

We want to be able to Sky + it in Ireland! I'd say C4 had a lot of Irish viewers. C5 is unavailable to UPC and everyone without Other Channels on Sky in this country. They should see about adding C5 to SKY!!!!

To think CBB8's launched peaked at 8 Million.

I blame CBB though, had they not of put BB on so early this wouldn't be happening.

I hope Smithy is right though, this series is VERY VERY VERY under rated.

They should bring back the live feed for next year, then the ratings would go up.

Not really, the article is just pointing out the ratings are going down and a lot lower than previous series which is just a fact

Also to think that lacking a LF is responsible for the show losing a million viewers is a bit ridiculous really
