Default Does anyone actually still believe in Adam and Eve?

Just curious, does anyone out there still actually believe in the concept that we were created by Adam and Eve?

I don't see how anyone could deny the fact of evolution.

Where do YOU think humans came from?

Believing in Adam and Eve =/= not believing in evolution

It depends on your interpreation of the holy texts. (The story of Genesis is very similar to the Quran) Some say that "the world was made in 6 days" is truely metaphorical. That means "a day" is not literally 24 hours. The debate about "Does God exist" is too long to say here.

I heard that the story of Eve & Adam wasn't meant to be a story of creation. It only became one when it was placed near the start of one of the early bible versions.

Personally, I think that God was the catch all term to explain things that didn't make sense to people who didn't have the knowledge that we have nowadays of science, geography and how the world works. It's silly how the two ideas can't co-exist because of hard line views on both sides. People who are vehemently against religion are just as bad as those who are vehemently for it. Aggressive views don't achieve anything other than intolerance for those views. As for the story of Adam and Eve, I see it as a morality tale more than anything - don't give in to temptation, especially when you've been forewarned about the consequences. Pretty sound advice if you ask me. Ignore the craziness of the Bible and take the values that can be applied to the modern day world and you've actually got a pretty good list of morals - it's just there's a lot of leeway for crazy people to interpret whatever the hell the like out of the Bible and other religious texts, and that's why I think that religious books were put together by people who wanted to control the masses and profit out of people's fears/lack of knowledge.

I'm not someone who's put a lot of research into religion because I've not been brought up around it in any way, which I'm extremely grateful for, but I have my opinions and they make sense to me.

About 50% of Americans, apparently.

The thing with Adam and Eve, is that if you are religious, but don't believe in the Adam and Eve story, then original sin and the fall of man didn't happen, and there is no need for Jesus at all. Because his mission is based solely on that story.

But then again, not many religious people have read the bible, old and new testaments, cover to cover.

I agree with what you say in the most part, with one major exception. You can't draw a parallel, in any way possible, from fundamentalist religious people, to atheists. It's a complete false equivalence to say they are as bad as each other. once you reject the idea of a god, which is all atheism is, then you can't reject it any more than that.

Atheism is not the same thing as being vehemently against religion though - I'm speaking about that brand of atheism that actively goes out and pisses all over religion - the type of person who goes out of their way to show why religion is wrong and why anyone who believes in it is stupid, that kind of person. Those people, pushing their belief of not believing in God down your throat, are just as bad as religious people who push their belief in God down your throat. That's the parallel I was drawing.

I think it's a little unfair to compare militant atheists with militant theists. There's a whole range of atrocities committed in the name of people "shoving God down your throat"... what's the worst Ricky Gervais or another unforgiving atheist has done? Pissed you off on Twitter?

People committing atrocities in the name of God are extremists in the name of a belief, you can't really have an equivalent extremist behaviour in the name of not having a belief, if that makes sense. But on a purely verbal level, they're just as bad as each other. Having somebody belittle people on the basis of what they believe is just as bad as belittling people on the basis of what they don't believe. I find it annoying when religious people try to get me to share my views, just as I find it annoying when non-religious people try to ridicule religion. That's just my stance, and even having that stance I don't feel comfortable discussing religion and rarely enter such debates.

I dunno, even those who are only verbally militant with their religion revel in telling you you're going to go to hell and want to see you suffer eternal damnation for the smallest of offences, the worst that militant atheists do is maybe be a bit obnoxious

..to me...I believe in what makes sense..and most of the bible doesn't..it's just like a fairy story..too full of extremes..but then I wasn't alive then and maybe it would make sense then..but I agree with Zee..people who vehemently oppose religion are equally as bad as religious fanatics..it's ironic though..that these fables of 'morals' have been interpretted in a way that have caused so much suffering

Militant atheists have an annoying air of thinking they are right, more intelligent and being above religious people, often being condescending towards them for 'wasting their time' etc. I'm not downplaying militant theists, they can be absolutely appalling, but militant atheists are just as bad for being obnoxious and condescending.

I think that God is science and science is God. Both sides could easily come to the conclusion that what the other one is trying to put forward as the 'right' idea, is in fact just another way of saying what they think the 'right' idea is - but there's been a built up conflict of religion vs science for centuries and I'm not sure it'll ever end. But my own personal conclusion is that the two might as well be the same idea, even if in practice they're two totally different things, but that's only because of the way in which the majority perceives them...

This thread is making me think deeply. I don't like it.

..tbh..I just think that religion preceded the scientist..I mean it had full reign over everything for a while because there was nothing to challenge it..and people like to have something to believe in...a reason...then along came science...and they've been sparring ever since

...Crikey...I don't know what I believe..it's too early to think about it now

I agree with Zee that science and God are the same thing. Science is based around energy and god is energy. We are energy. EVERYTHING is made of energy.

I think religion has become so misinterpreted over generations as well. And I think people take the bible too seriously. Wasn't it not written until 100 years after Jesus died or something?

I don't believe in Adam + Eve. Its one big crock of sh!t. But on the other hand, the concept of evolution just happening by itself sounds equally dodgy to me.

I think that God guided evolution and made it happen. Its the thing that makes the most sense to me.
