Default Global Governance and off world Colonisation

Debate for today chaps:

We can't be any more than 60 years away from any series colonisation attempt of suitable terrestrial planets in the Solar System. With that in mind is there going to be a time when the nations of Earth finally become a singular entity, politically and financially (United Space organisations etc) and if you think so when do you envisage that happening?

I think we are definitely heading in that direction and it will more than likely begin with a global currency, I have no idea when it will happen though.

It would be interesting to see how much the States, China, Russia and other powerful nations demand a part In any global Democratic organisation.

They're May not but as it stands we are the United Kingdom and we are also a member state of the European Union. I don't feel French and I don't watch bull fighting while wearing a pair of leiderhosen but we are all in the same boat.

I'm not disputing that at all fingers I'm under no illusion that any global United Nation will be run for the benefit of certain elements of society and at the detriment of others.

My next debate topic will actually be about human nature and why some people can be so callous and cruel.

When we start to colonise outside the solar system a unified Earth will pretty much be a necessaty. Independent nations will bankrupt themselves with the costs it will take to make the plunge. I think It will get to the point where each planet will represent nations that we have today.

Also with a combined space program a larger pool of resources will be available for bolder projects.

Sooner or later it won't be what's best for each country, it will be what's best for humanity.

Nah there's too much cultural/religious/historical/economic/national/etc. variation across the world for everyone to ever be united under one government, unless it was more really of a symbolic thing and all the countries just governed themselves still anyway but even then I don't think people would want that

If it did happen it's hundreds of years away in a Futurama type world

That's what I think it will be. A larger version of the European Union with more effective powers but independent nations will probably keep their sovereignty.

However, I think in 200 years time the following will be the case;

1) Religion will be in major remission

2) People will be so integrated that nationalities will become nothing more than a term of identity.

3) the appetite for finding resources outside of our planet couple with the depletion of our own will be too much for super corporations to ignore.

Recently it seems to be going the other way first two though, Islam is growing all the time and playing a bigger part in how a lot of countries govern themselves in places like Turkey, and it's played a big role in the Arab spring in Libya, Syria, and sort of Egypt though Morsi has been toppled now. I also think the Catholic Church is resurging a bit, especially in South America and that will only carry on with having an Argentinian Pope now

And there's also more countries being created now not less, Kosovo and South Sudan are a couple of recent ones I can think of, and there's still lots of nationalist groups still trying to break away and create independent nations

Islam should eventually see it's enlightenment. Religion is so flawed it's unbelievable and people are naturally inquisitive. If religion ever dominates human thinking and reasoning again we don't deserve to be an advanced species.

More countries might be feasible now but in the future it won't be. All these little countries will have next to no say in the advancement of humanity and with the price we have to pay to traverse the stars no country will be able to foot the bill.

Scotland will probably get independence in the referendum, but it will most likely attempt to become a member state of the European Union.

If there hasn't been a global enlightened wave of atheism sweep across the world in the last few hundred years I don't see much reason to think there will be in another few hundred, I don't think we're as intelligent as we often think compared to previous generations of humans and religions will always adapt and evolve to changing times as they always have done

Although colonising different planets would completely change the way people see things I suppose, but I don't think anything that major or radical will happen for at least 500 years

Such optimism! If anything, most of the nation's who were interested in space exploration are pulling BACK on funding. I very much doubt we'll have seen a successful manned mission to Mars (maybe to orbit, but not a landing with someone setting foot) in the next 60 years, much less an offworld colonization. We'll probably destroy ourselves before that happens.
