It's been a while since I have been on a date and I am trying to set some up for the start of next year but I kind of just need some reassurance to kick me in to gear as I have a few hangups with guys due to past relationships.

So yeah, please help.

My advice is not to bother with 'dates'. Just go out, and if you meet someone you meet someone, just plan on going maybe to the pub or something a few days later. Or get with one of your already 'acquaintances/friend group'

Yeah, but being gay it's a lot harder to do that and meet guys unless I go the gay bars and that usually attracts the wrong type of attention.

Try to be confident, but not cocky. Try to be comfortable with yourself and the situation. Don't be scared to say how you are feeling and most of all, just be yourself.

Someone I know takes dates out with their group of friends to the pub so that they can chat one on one but also be part of a group in case it's not meant to be and then if after a few dates at the pub with friends they still seem fine then they go on proper dates. Seems to work for her.

Hmm. I forget that everywheres not like here. We seems to have more gay people than straight ones in gateshead so there would be no need to go to the gay bars (which funnily enough, have more straights than gays )

I just think of dates as good practise for your people skills. Don't pretend you're something you're not, don't lie about yourself, just talk about what interests you and find out what interests your date - be an active listener. Ask them questions, ask them follow up questions to whatever they've just said... it's surprising how many people aren't capable of doing that.

How are you planning to actually find dates? Like..through people you know, or dating websites and stuff?

If its the second then theres not really much avoiding that awkward first date thing (after that you could suggest meeting with groups of friends) but if its the first you could skip right to groups..which is so much easier.
