Default Phil Hughes

Australia Test batsman Phil Hughes has died, two days after being hit on the head by a ball.
Australia team doctor Peter Brukner said he never regained consciousness and died in hospital in Sydney.
Hughes, 25, was carried off on a stretcher at the Sydney Cricket Ground after a short-pitched delivery struck his head, missing his helmet.
He had CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before being taken to hospital and placed in an induced coma.
In a statement, Brukner said: "It is my sad duty to inform you that a short time ago Phillip Hughes passed away. He never regained consciousness following his injury on Tuesday.
"He was not in pain before he passed and was surrounded by his family and close friends.
"As a cricket community we mourn his loss and extend our deepest sympathies to Phillip's family and friends at this incredibly sad time.
"Cricket Australia kindly asks that the privacy of the Hughes family, players and staff be respected."

Such a tragic accident, poor young guy

Such **** news. It's ridiculous how rare his injuries were, Such an unlucky guy. Got to feel for the bloke that bowled the ball at him. Terrible day for sport.

They said his helmet was an older version I think Kaz but is just one of those freak million to one things that happen. So sad. Completely devastated for the bowler too, they were friends and had come through the ranks together. He is having counselling I believe.

Yeah reality is you can never completely eliminate risk really, apparently there had only ever been 100 cases of the 'vertebral artery dissection' which caused the injury

Cricket helmets are improving all the time though, wasn't even that long ago that a lot of batsmen would come up against the fastest bowlers in the world without wearing one. One of the effects of improved helmets is that batsman are less cautious against the short ball now though, they can afford to be a lot more aggressive against a 90mph bouncer at their heads. Again though this is such a freak incident its hard to draw too many conclusions from it
