Default Smoking with kids in cars banned

'From 1 October 2015 it will be illegal to smoke in a car (or other vehicles) with anyone under 18 present. The law is changing to protect children and young people from the dangers of secondhand smoke.

Both the driver and the smoker could be fined £50. The law applies to every driver in England and Wales, including those aged 17 and those with a provisional driving licence. The law does not apply if the driver is 17 years old and is on their own in the car.'

I would have thought people would have the sense not to smoke in a car with young children, without it being law,but I guess some humans need it hammering home. It's a good thing.

I actually saw a woman in a car at a petrol station smoking with a couple of kids in the car and the window open a crack. I'm sure the vast majority of people wouldn't dream of doing it, but like you say... there are always a few.

It might be illegal but how will it be enforced, if the police don't have time to come out to burglaries pretty disgusting that a law against it has to be passed that said it's not something I see happening very often

Some people are really stupid Livia, very thoughtless and selfish, but they don't seem to be the people who suffer any consequences,it always seems to be nice ,caring people.

A very very valid point Cherie.

The irony is, that normal, educated, responsible parents do not need this legislation, yet the ignorant, irresponsible parents that do, are the very ones who will contemptuously IGNORE it.

I will return to an earlier post of mine; 'Sleeping Policemen'/'Speed Bumps' - the very idiots who necessitate the installation of such 'speed deterrents' are the boy racer/selfish idiots/ who merely drive over the bumps at 100mph. The rest of us who sensibly comply with speed limits anyway have to foot the bill for these bumps and pay through the extra wear and tear on our vehicles suspensions - even though we drive over them within the speed limit.

I don't know anyone that's stupid enough to smoke in a car with kids present. Thankfully.

Even if they are caught and fined they are still most likely to light up indoors as they didn't care in the first place not to put their kids health at risk or are too uneducated to know the dangers

That's the key point there, a small roomed house is no different from a car. We will be needing the smoking police to enter peoples house along with the clean bum checkers.

for sure they should be fined too, where will it all end Instead of fining people they should run some shock adverts along the lines of the drink driving adverts to raise awareness though you would have to have your head stuck in the sand not to realise the dangers of exposing kids to passive smoking in this day and age
