This week shoppers in Ireland started having their change rounded to the nearest five cents, if they agreed, in an effort to take one and two cent coins out of circulation.
It follows a trial in Wexford and similar measures in countries like the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Hungary.
"Since the euro was introduced in 2001 Ireland has spent €37million [£27million] issuing one and two cent coins - minting the coppers at three times the rate of the rest of the eurozone," said Dr Ronnie O'Toole, an economist at the Irish Central Bank
