Police who pulled over Bentley-driving DJ and told him it was a 'fact' black people commit more crime were NOT being racist, watchdog rules

• DJ was driving hired car near a London nightclub in which he often performs
• When he was pulled over by police, he kept his dashboard camera running
• He recorded an officer saying black men were more likely to commit crime
• Officer said: 'This isn't racist. Predominantly, the criminal profile of people who do it are black people'
• IPCC says it wasn't racist but officer has got training after 'clumsly' language

Police who pulled over a Bentley-driving DJ and said it was a 'fact' black people commit more crime were not being racist, an independent probe concluded.

Officers stopped DMO Deejay while he was filming a music video in central London and said it was common practice for black men to be stopped when they're wearing 'gangsta-style clothing'.

Scotland Yard apologised after widespread claims of racism following the incident in Leicester Square at around midnight on January 5.

But the police watchdog investigation found there was 'no evidence the officer's comments were intentionally discriminatory or targeted'.

An IPCC investigation report said: 'The car was stopped after being spotted changing lanes randomly without indicating, with the top down in the early hours of a winter morning.

'Checks also revealed that the car was registered to a dealership rather than an individual.

Whether or not it's true, why spout it out when pulling someone over? Sure, they guy could have been all "derr why pull me over waycist" but you just tell him to shut up and drive properly if you don't wanna be pulled over.

There's a good reason that the police aren't supposed to engage in racial profiling, whether the stats back it up or not. He may not have been being outright "racist", as such, but by his own admission he was profiling, which is by definition a form of racial prejudice?

Obviously we dont know what the 2 "gentlemen" were like but I would imagine they were entitled and vile to the Officer who probably gets "your a racist mate" on every stop like that

They don't seem to be struggling for people wanting to join the force. They get paid to do this job, they really need to know how to deal with people who are going to be annoyed/frustrated it's what they signed up for after all.

I think when you get it 24/7 its not as easy as that. Its not like you are dealing with people buying toothpaste. Every stop you can get killed, that is EVERY stop. Its unbelievably stressfull. And you are dealing with utter scumbags, people most of us have never come across.

The truth is it has more to to with poverty than race. We no longer need sociologists to tell us why poor people are bad.

it was a confrontational statement to make, whether it is true or not. It is not the job of the police to invite confrontation, and that was clearly their aim, why else would they say it. Given that the whole conversation was recorded on the video, the full context of the exchange must be available

Well exactly, as LT rightly points out, the job of a police officer can become a dangerous one at any time so part of that job is to defuse tense situations, not escalate them and make them more dangerous?
