It's a really weird situation this one... totally out of nowhere and doesn't entirely make sense. If Kim Jong IS being honest in his intentions, I reckon there has to be more to the story. Either NK has simply completely run out of resources to continue as they are and he's finally made the sensible choice to engage with the world rather than go for broke... OR perhaps there have already been secret talks and he's been offered something, or given an ultimatum.

I wonder if the last few years have mainly been about Kim consolidating his own position in the country and now he feels secure enough that he can reach out and try to mend their relationship with the world. Definitely never looked like we'd be seeing scenes like this a couple of months ago

Got to admire Kim's sense of humour as well apologising for waking the South Korean President up early with all his missile tests lol

"It's time for us to stop these silly games and join the world..."

A hologram of a run-down city slowly dissolves, revealing a bustling metropolis...

Perched for NK turning out to secretly be super-advanced and full of happy, healthy people and flying cars and stuff and the whole thing has been a cover like Wakanda.

Apparently an accident caused North Korea's nuclear test site to collapse, meaning their nuclear programme is dead in the water either way

They must serve really good food in SK...

Either that or it could also be that both nations have in secret decided they will work together to take over the rest of the world using KPOP and addicting computer games... Japan's golden age to return in full-force? Except this time, with both Koreas united against the West?... RichardG will be very pleased. I really hope they let him come back though after they make him into a skilled foreign hax0r...

Am I the only one who feels that this momentous development would NOT be happening without Trump's part in the way he reacted to 'Kim Not So Nice But Dim'?

South Korea credits Trump for opening door to talks with North
https://www.cnn.com/2018/04/26/world...ntl/index.html

Quote:
South Korea's foreign minister has said she believes President Donald Trump is largely responsible for bringing North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to the negotiating table.

Speaking ahead of Friday's historic summit between the leaders of North and South Korea, Kang Kyung-wha told CNN that the US President had played a significant role in bringing the two sides together.

"Clearly, credit goes to President Trump," Kang told CNN's Christiane Amanpour in Seoul. "He's been determined to come to grips with this from day one."

IF he's being genuine (I think we have to keep in mind that NK isn't above faking it) then, technically, yes I think Trump is to credit... Although from what's being said, it's not so much down to negotiating tactics or skill... I think he's simply out-crazied Kim Jong / called his bluff successfully.

That is to say... Kim Jong knows fine well that NK couldn't win a nuclear standoff with the US and always has... But he actually believes that Trump is mad enough to go ahead and press the button (or mount an invasion of NK) and he's backing down.

I wonder, is that luck or skill on Trump's part? Is he also just bluffing with his apparent "instability" because he WANTS opponents to believe it?

Either way I'd say a risky tactic has paid off. He accurately gambled that Kim Jong would "blink first" so to speak, because Kim is more of a troll than an actual madman. If it had turned out to be the latter, it could be a very different outcome.

I don't think trump had any effect on it. NK has been crippled by sanctions and they had a recent visit to China where they were probably told a few home truths. I mean if NK get China to have their backs, then they don't need to fear a USA invasion, so by saying they are removing their nuke capability, they get a chance to be safe for a while and build up their resources again untouched. It's a win win. They can always restart their nuke program after they have a few quid in the bank.

I'd wait and see before crediting Trump with anything.
There were Korean summits before, there were calls for denuclearisation before.

Well that's the concern really... How genuine are they this time? Is it a real drive for peace / change, or is it about buying time while still secretly developing weapons and defenses?

The real test - if it does come to anything at all - will be if we see any indication of them becoming less insular and engaging with the rest of the world in meaningful ways / improvements in quality of life for NK civilians, etc.

So that the leaders can go back and lie to them about the specifics of what was said and how it all went down?
