Default The 12 earners BBC all MEN highest paid

Gary Lineker has taken over Chris Evans to top of a BBC rich list which is dominated by men, new figures revealed.

The Match Of The Day host is the corporation's biggest earner, taking home between £1.75 million and £1,759,999.

He replaces Chris Evans at the top, who is shown to be earning between £1.6 million and £1,669,999 for his Radio 2 Breakfast show.

Last year's accounts showed the Radio 2 Breakfast DJ took home up to £2,249,999 in the 12 months to April 2017 and his salary has been reduced since stepping down from Top Gear.

The top 10 published this year is made up of men, with Lineker and Evans followed by Radio 2 DJ Graham Norton, on up to £609,999 - not including payments for his TV chat show.

The other big earners are also men - broadcasters Steve Wright, Huw Edwards, Jeremy Vine, Alan Shearer, Nicky Campbell, Nick Grimshaw and Stephen Nolan.

The BBC argues that the list does not reflect the true balance of payments to men and women as salaries through BBC Studios, which is not funded by the licence fee and became a commercial entity, are not revealed.

If included, they would feature payments to Claudia Winkleman for Strictly Come Dancing, Alex Jones for The One Show and Fiona Bruce for Antiques Roadshow.

It also says that changes to pay packets in recent months are also not reflected as the list is compiled from salaries up to April this year.

There are women on the list who did not appear last year.
Mary Berry's salary is published this year, showing the former Great British Bake Off judge earns between £190,000 to £199,999 'for a range of programmes and series'.

Women who are on the list of stars earning more than £150,000 this year and appear to have received pay rises include Newsnight's Emily Maitlis.
Maitlis, who was absent last year despite co-host Evan Davis appearing, took home between £220,000 and £229,999.

Woman's Hour host Jane Garvey, who has been outspoken in her criticism of the gender pay pay, is another new name and was paid between £150,000 and £159,000 for work which also includes programmes on 5 Live and episodes of Fortunately.

Other female stars to appear this year include Newsbeat's Tina Daheley, who was paid between £150,000 and £159,000, which also includes cover for BBC Breakfast and Victoria Derbyshire.

None of them deserve what they earn.

Lineker sits in a chair for an hour on a Saturday night and talks about a football match that we've all just watched for ourselves.

pay to so-called talent is difficult to gauge, but the disparity is rather obvious

I'll take Emily Maitlis over Huv Edwards any day

and now also after each world cup match we have VI Oranje, staying at home, where we discuss the world cup matches and mocking the opponents errors or embarrassing moments in the world cup

How on earth did Grimmy get a pay rise when after the last list he recorded the worst listening figures in Radio 1 Breakfast's history? Someone has a good agent

And damn Jeremy Vine really did stick to his word and take a pay cut

I would still be annoyed if a woman got paid over £1 million for work that doesn’t relate to the wage. So bring the men’s down to the women I say!

Why’s Chris Evans paid so much? He’s not that good.
Gary Lineker does a great job so it’s understandsble.
I’m glad Jeremy Vine stuck to his word and took a pay cut.
Nick Grimshaw has pay rise but he got like the worst listening figures. Get rid of him

Do they all appear on a lot of shows? And are these shows all highly watched/listened to? Are they "name celebrities", whose presence is a draw? In most cases - yes, yes, yes. Though I echo the "god knows why" for Grimmy.

I assume they're paid based on the viewership the shows they're on attract... So it makes sense when, say, it's someone like Graham Norton who love him or loathe him very much "is his show". Linekar though... ... his viewership is high because football is popular. And that's pretty much it. They could put a hat and glasses on a honey glazed ham and prop it up with a voiceover chatting about footy and the viewership wouldn't change.

So I guess the question isn't "why are women paid less", so much as "why is it usually men who are picked to front the biggest shows".

The Chris Evans conundrum I have said before I will just never understand. WHY does anyone want to see him or hear him at all. Ever. .

[edit]Also just having briefly looked into it, Norton is actually potentially the top earner, as he's only paid directly by the BBC for his radio stuff and Eurovision and things like that (the figure of £600,000 quoted in the article). With the show, the BBC pays the production company that makes it who then pay Norton. His total income in 2017 was well over £2 million. So basically a lot of the direct figures from the BBC are meaningless...

Yeah tv showbusiness pays a hell of alot ,but some of them get paid a huge amount .

But yeah it's based on views, popularity etc . If it's a celebrity who's been on TV for years like Linekar and scholfield then it doesn't surprise me they get a high pay cheque .

The sad issue with that, though, is... to be very, very blunt... women on TV generally have a sell-by-date where men don't. Obviously not universally true, but in general, it is... Norton is pushing 60 but he's not going anywhere. Ant and Dec would have been on prime time until retirement if Ant hadn't become a greek tragedy. Whereas other than the odd exception, women get until 50 if they're lucky.

The same goes for Hollywood really. A large number of male stars who are big names in their early years continue to front big movies well into middle age. Women - even prominent ones - are usually relegated to character / supporting roles .

But who knows what the solution is there... it's a societal issue. What sells, sells and it can't be forced .

Yeah I agree . I think tv presenters , tv judges and news readers struggle the most .

When I think of news readers there's alot of old MALE presenters that have been on our screens since beginning of time AKA the originals ie Trevor McDonald was still doing the news , now he does his own documentry specials , Huw Edwards still on our screens ,Harry gration etc . And usually they get younger female co presenters .

But female news readers that get long in the tooth get replaced ie Anna Ford & Moira Stewart etc .

And even with The apprentice Sugar's aide Margaret got replaced by Karen
And with strictly come dancing Arlene was originally replaced by Alesha who's much younger .

I don't think the movie actreses have the same struggle, look at the success of legendary thesbyians like Helen Mirren , Maggie Smith ,Judi Dench , Julie Walters .
They've had plenty of leading roles, and they're bound to play supporting roles once in a while .

Mary Berry was in her early hundreds when she got famous, but then she's the exception.

They do have the same struggle. Helen Mirren's and Judi Dench's are the exceptions, not the rules.

Older actresses are relegated to playing "Grandmother" etc. Rarely do they get to be leads, and when they do, it goes to someone who's always had a major career like the people you list.

Well I think we're paying too much on our TV license, if that's what they're earning.

Tbf, they need to compete with the commercial channels in that respect otherwise they'd get no one to work for them who can get paid 100x more elsewhere.

So they steal money of us instead. They don't even produce good TV anymore. I wouldn't pay for BBC at the moment, given the choice.

If they can't compete, wrap it up.
