So I have a roommate and every time I turn my (smart) TV on or off, it switches the WiFi/network off of his PS4, so whenever he is in a game, he gets disconnected...
Is this a common thing? Is there anything I can do to stop it? Honestly it’s a pain in the ass

My tv is in my bedroom and his PS4 is in a separate room (the living room) so I don’t know if that makes a difference p

Has the PS4 ever been connected to your TV (the one in your bedroom) before? There must be a setting on the TV somewhere where it may be still connected to the PlayStation maybe?

You mean the wi-fi switches to your TV as though it will only use one device at a time or switches off completely?

His PS4 has never been connected to my Tv
And it like flickers on and off... he gets briefly disconnected for about 30 seconds

So I take it that you have your TV on, his PS4 is on all is fine. Then you turn your TV off, the WiFi disconnects for about 30 seconds and then (now that your TV is still off) his PS4 reconnects to the WiFi automatically?

It may possibly be an update on the TV is needed or maybe (im not sure if Smart TVs have this setting) it could be your WiFi not picking up the TV as a ‘trusted device’ possibly.

Sounds to me like the router is trying to assign the same local IP address to both devices (technical term is IP Address Conflict). When both are on, it gives the PS4 a different address but then when you switch off the TV, the router defaults his connection back to what it "wanted" to be and that would briefly disconnect him. It's probably happening to both of you. It would be a split second which wouldn't interrupt TV streaming (because of buffering) BUT it would reset any connections which would mean getting booted from an online gaming session... So it's likely happening both ways, just with the smart TV it's so brief you don't notice.
The solution is to log onto the router from a computer when both devices are ON, find them in the list of connected devices, and assign at least one of them a static IP address out of the default range. I'd just set both. 192.168.0.101 to 192.168.0.199 are a good bet for avoiding clashes. Last edited by Toy Soldier; 07-07-2019 at 11:37 PM. |

I would add to that though (advice more for your room mate) - wireless connections are notoriously awful for online gaming, especially on PS4, and they'd be much better off spending a few £ on a long ethernet cable and using a wired connection. Depending on where the router is. Though in my University shared house we had 20 metre cables running up and down the stairs attached with duck tape

It’s if I turn it on or off... both. It kicks him out of any game he’s playing. It says ‘network dosconnected’ And then kicks him off

Oh I just realised I forgot to suggest the solution that I actually use for wired PS4 connection
![]() If running a cable isn't feasible, then those plugs you can buy that send the signal over your electrical wiring are actually not bad at all. Plug one in next to the router, one next to the PS4, couple of ethernet cables, works perfectly ![]() |

Tibb is an invaluable resource to be honest. Whenever anyone brings up current news events I already know about it because invariably someone has already made a thread on here
![]() "Did you hear about..." "Yeh there was a thread on Tibb" is a very common phrase in my house ![]() |
