I think there's stuff in Little Britain that can pass in a stand-up comedy but not in a mainstream TV show. And lots of things in stand-up that just can't and shouldn't be in mainstream (essentially) "family telly".

Me and my wife say and laugh about things at home that we would not in public. Me and my friends say things in WhatsApp groups that we would never say on a public forum or open social media.

No one is telling you what you're privately allowed to find funny or what you "should" find insulting. You can disagree with someone and still have consideration for them.

Henning Wehn the German comedian made a couple of Holocaust jokes on Live at the Apollo. I didn't see anyone demand he is taken off TV. I didn't see the usual long line of white Anglo Saxons making threads and saying how disgusting it was.

If we tell people what they can laugh at, what's next? Telling people what they can read?

Indeed, Fawlty Towers was one of the pioneers of the "genre", so to speak. You're not supposed to agree with Basil Fawlty. You're not supposed to agree with his treatment of Manuel. Sure, John Cleese describes himself as a Liberal, and it was co-written by Connie Booth! I don't know anything about her apart from Fawlty Towers, but still

But I specifically pointed out that stand-up comedy is distinctly different to prime time family television? Whether or not Little Britain was ever intended to be that isn't really relevant; it became that.

I also specifically said it's not about telling people what they can or can't find funny. You can find something funny and still have consideration for those who you know won't find it funny.

For what it's worth I'm not a huge fan of "erasing history" - I don't think there's much sense in pulling or censoring things that have already been made and aired, in time it'll only distort historical perspective. We can look back on old shows from the 60's and think "Ooooh, that wouldn't fly these days" and appreciate and understand why. I wonder how people will be able to do that in 40 years time if we pretend that shows from the 2000's never existed?

But I say that still fully recognising why it simply isn't funny for many people, and for many reasons.

yes here in Netherlands, we got a Nostalgia TV channel, basically lots of old shows being re-aired there

we also have one comedian, one of our comedy icons you can easily call him, André van Duin, his shows from back then wouldn't be appropriate now, however he himself is still very popular also with younger people, having adapted to modern day TV industry as presenter for dutch bake off, as for his comedy he just makes random cheesy humour songs for carnaval here (where that is still allowed, since it is for light entertainment purpose)

Where do we draw the line though? There's no one-size-fits-all legislation for this. Humour can be cruel. And people are teased for all sorts of reasons

It does make me smile that this current generation of young people doesn't understand that this feeling that you're going to be the generation that changes the world.... are at the end of a long line of generations that thought the same.

The only things which should be taken off the table are calls to violence. Otherwise, every single type of person should be mocked and laughed at, if that's the kind of "comedy" they want to produce or watch

I was talking to my dad the other day, and we were talking about the statues and TV programmes and he told me about a show in the 80's called mini-pops that was just basically tv for paedo's.

I watched a few clips on YT the other day as there's not much around anymore and it was completely shocking to watch through a 2020 lens.
