I feel like nowadays people want to add prejudice to every issue that they have, it's deeply irritating and it takes people's attention away from real prejudice incidents.

Personally whether the Sauce really tastes like Jerk Sauce or not, McDonald's are just adding a meal to their menu that has Jamaican flavouring on it, imo that's much less offensive than not having it because they perceive it to be "beneath them."

You don't want to believe that it's a thing and you're perfectly entitled to that ignorance. You can try to misrepresent what it is all you want but it won't change that it's not what you think it is.
I've never really heard anyone try to actually explain what it is, they just say "profiting off cultures you weren't born into is bad."

Why is it bad? All cultures are there for the taking, so if someone wants to shine a lot on them, why shouldn't they?

I’m sure McDonald’s have been making this burger for quite a while (or they had one which was very similar because I remember buying it a couple years back) and there was no issue like this surfacing so I’m a bit confused as to why this has come about now?

Eh, people decide to get offended about Fawlty Towers or Gone with the Wind every few years, I guess it's the turn of Mcdonald's to smell the pissy diapers of righteous fury

People could go on about actual worthy causes when it come to McDon's, such as how they contribute to the destruction of rainforests, keep expanding the disgusting meat industry, or even the crappy wages they pay the staff ... but no, what they call a sauce is much worse, apparently.

It's not shining a light on them though, it's co-opting it for profit. You only have to look at history and various examples of colonialisation (and attempts to erase said culture after colonisation) to see why it would be seen as an issue. If you want to understand why cultural appropriation is a thing, you have to be willing to look at history.

Respectfully partaking in different cultures is good, co-opting it for profit while trying to take credit for it is not.

Okay, that's a fair answer, and one won't call wrong or dismiss

But ... I don't happen to agree Someone living today who wants to create something from another culture has nothing to do with imperial wrongs in the past. We are ourselves, not our ancestors.

The imperial past of the Ottoman Empire shouldn't stop a Turkish singer from using Greek music, for example.

You're choosing not to see the issue and instead muddying the issue by drawing on examples that simply aren't appropriation to lessen it's impact.

Appreciation and appropriation are two different things.

Katy Perry doing that infamous performance of 'Unconditionally' at that awards show was appropriation of Japanese culture because it was hackneyed and stereotypical and basically derogatory. She also appropriated Egypt in the same era with Dark Horse. She took elements of dress and culture from these two places and profited from it by presenting it as painfully stereotypical as possible.

But ugh, I can't be bothered to waste my time with this. You won't ever get it because you don't want to.

There's no impact to lessen, not a single Japanese or Egyptian person was harmed by the things you mention, and there's nothing stopping anyone else from drawing inspiration from those cultures. Just like there's nothing stopping them from mimicking American styles for profit.

This isnt appropriation. You can find great Jerk Chicken burgers recipes online from many sources and many pubs will do a jerk chicken burger. This isnt an example but its always amusing to see this forums typical comments on issues like this.

A good recent example was when a bunch of female pop-stars starting wearing bindis on their heads as a fashion statement. Appropriation does exist.

I'm pretty sure good ol' fish'n'chips (and northern staples like pies and pasties) are the OG "fast food".

I was referring to Burger chains as the thread is about Maccy D’s, we could also say Black Friday is a cultural appropriation with its links to the Thanksgiving holiday

A nice piece of common sense here.
People outside the minority extreme woke bubble can see how ridiculous it all is.

Genuine question; if this is appropriation, is non-celtic cultures wearing tartan as fashion also appropriation?
