Exclamation Public Fatness

Public health has never been a priority in the UK

We have shocking levels of obesity and shocking levels of Covid-19 deaths.

90% of global deaths have occurred in countries with high rates of obesity.

No country with high death rates has less than 50% of its population overweight.

Vietnam has the lowest covid death rate in the world and the 2nd lowest
level of overweight people.

The UK has the 3rd highest death rate in the world and the 4th highest obesity rate. It does not prove cause and effect but its highly suspicious.

In the UK 80% of adults carry excess body fat so are high risk of premature death not just from covid but diabetes, heart disease, cancer, liver and kidney disease and suicide.

You name it and obesity increases your risk of it. It should be a priority.

Hmmmmmm partially but a bit misleading; the number one risk factor for Covid death is age, pure and simple, no ifs or buts, and countries with high levels of obesity tend to be affluent countries which also have a higher overall life expectancy. It will play a part obviously and it is a huge health issue in other ways, but I think the "high covid deaths because people are fat" proposition is dubious.

Chile recently positioned itself as a world leader in obesity-control strategies as per their latest "anti-obesity" measures.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...nk-sales-by-23

In France, what's in the books for later this year is to stop promoting any type of junk/high sugar food in commercial breaks during kids shows on TV and online.

Gyms motivate people to move more and do more, closing gyms is obviously going to result in an increase of obesity, they’re directly related..

For some people they are necessary to keep weight off.

That’s just like saying schools aren’t necessary for people to become educated, yes technically some people can self teach... but for many they are necessary

You do not speak for everyone, do you even use the gym? Because I am speaking from the perspective of an avid gym goer and have seen obese people start the gym and lose the weight in front of my eyes over a large period.

Yeah there's definitely other ways to keep the weight off, yes some people might prefer the gym.

But there's walking, there's eating less and more healthy.
And there's indoor exercises . I think some of us just feel less motivated at times.

Just pointing out the correlation with gyms closing and obesity increasing, glad to educate you on the matter

Yep, there's a tonne of people even more motivated too. Online fitness classes with trainers, people having more free time to exercise.

Far too simplistic to say "Oh, gym's are closed. That's why people are fat". But people like to feel clever.

Some people need the structure of a gym or classes to exercise, pointless walking if you are just ambling along you need your heart rate raised to benefit

good, i went to gym only few times so far (mostly quite some years back since i was too lazy according to my mom, and since i was back then still growing in my teens i had to remain in shape, but i never found it much fun, and also working on how i walk, i am sometimes more like hunchback of notre dame, and as a tall guy like me, that is bad for your back)

gyms are good for you yes, and also you can socially distance and stick to rules in gyms i have to mention as well, what US had done after their first wave tbh what we know

The TIBB Gods know I don't always agree with Marsh, but come on guys, he's not wrong about this. He didn't say gyms don't help to keep weight off, but that gyms are not the only way to keep weight off. The post was crystal clear. So on this note indeed gyms aren't always necessary to keep weight off.
And it's actually true. Some people keep weight off through different ways: swimming, eating better (which you need to for the gym exercices to work properly anyway), walk, play a different sport, reduce stress etc In the end the common factor is to eat better and move more. Plain and simple.

I was a fat kid and then played rugby first for many years before hitting the gym from the age of 15. At 15, I was big but not fat and hitting the gym kept me at a good weight level. I could have done without it, had my end goal was different. Some of my rugby mates never hit the gym and kept weight off too.
So it really depends on your end goal. Different means for different people, and not all techniques work for everybody. You have to find your own.
At the end of the day, promoting healthier eating habits and encouraging to move more (and better!) is the way forward to prevent such rising health crisis.

They know that. It was a piss poor attempt at baiting.

Not to mention a lot of people can't afford trainers or gym memberships, and don't need them to follow an exercise regimen.

I agree.

In my opinion gyms are just the tip of the iceberg, I wouldn't be surprised if groups like slimmers world and weight watchers closing has done more harm.
