A Canadian nurse is under investigation by a health regulator after complaints were made about an "I [heart] J.K. Rowling" billboard she paid for.



Amy Hamm is being investigated by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) following complaints that her view that identifying as trans does not equate to changing biological sex would threaten "trans and gender-diverse communities," according to Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) lawyers representing the nurse.

But Hamm argues that none of her views would impact her ability to help her patients.

"Fighting for women's sex-based rights has no impact on my ability to provide care as a nurse. There is nothing hateful or transphobic about women's rights," Hamm wrote to Newsweek.

Dunno if it's the same in Canada but in the UK the professional college (Royal College of Nursing or "RCN") is not the same thing as the professional governing body (The Nursing and Midwifery Council, or "NMC")...

Over here, the NMC is the one you have to worry about (they can suspend or completely strip the professional registration so you can't be a nurse at all any more i.e. "being struck off") and an RCN investigation is ... . They could slap you on the wrist or kick you out of the RCN entirely but you don't need to be an RCN member to practice as a nurse... whilst it's by far the largest, there are other groups/unions. It has no REAL bearing on what jobs you can hold or apply for.

Regardless of how much weight the organisation investigating her carries, it's a bit ridiculous she's being dragged over the coals for something like this.

Well yes they'll be trying to figure out whether it's more damaging to be seen to "let it slide", or be seen to "be heavy-handed"... and that's what they'll care about: the balance of what will sell better to their membership (if it is indeed an entity with voluntary membership).

Most likely middle-ground scenario is that they'll "ask" her not to do anything similar in future. Technically, medical professionals are supposed to keep personal politics out of their work, but on this occasion it's not clear that she in any way to her actual work or displayed it in a way that could cause reputational damage to the profession... and on the topic overall, it's a complicated one, as the trans rights debate actually does have direct professional implications for healthcare professionals so there does have to be some debate "allowed" even in a professional setting. That said, "I love JK" billboards wouldn't really fall under the heading of academic debate.

canada is very progressive regarding trans rights etc, and this is a gigantic pop at that because of the uproar against jk rowling, so its aimed to create controversy, it's much bigger than jk rowling. It will certainly have pissed off a sizeable chunk of the population and it could be argued that interferes with her ability to do her job treating everyone fairly by their medical needs

Yeah this is what I mean really, it is a very relevant, contentious and current issue in nursing but it's vital that the debate stays respectful and professional. "Invoking JK Rowling" is a clear dogwhistle and it's intended to rile up a fight rather than start a debate... which isn't productive for the actual healthcare issues that need hammering out (somehow).

Maybe but not necessarily, it's more that "being investigated" isn't as "omg" as people like to make out. If someone complains, then they have a duty to investigate, even if there's not much to the claim... it doesn't mean there's anything to investigate, but it's also not "super woke" for them to take the complaint seriously... any complaint should be looked into... then they'll discover if there's merit to the complaint or not. I feel like people think there's some sort of "lesser" stage that it's gone past to become an investigation.

Personally, -isms aside I have no idea how Elliot isn’t building up infractions simply for spamming/baiting because it’s constant in these threads.
