And not due to how annoying it was

But insurance companies would not pay out if someone deliberately thrashed their home

i know someone that dropped their tv down a flight of stairs so they could get the latest model on insurance. I know someone that didn't maintain their house roof for 20 years, until it got wrecked in a storm and they got a new one for free. Insurance companies are much wiser to it these days and it's flipped in their favour more now, but the fact remains, if people think they can get something for nothing, they will go for it
