Cool Iain Dale (LBC) collapsed on the tube - no one helped him!

Ten days ago, I had spent a lovely 24 hours in Fowey, Cornwall, speaking at a
literary festival. I was returning home through London’s Charing Cross
Underground station when disaster struck. I was about to go through the gates
at the top of the escalators when I fell. Heavily. On my side.

I lay there for about a minute, slightly stunned, gathering myself. During that
time and the few minutes afterwards, not a single member of the public came
to my assistance, either to offer me comfort or to help me to my feet. Not one.
Obviously they all had places to go, people to see, but it was profoundly
saddening that noticing a fellow passenger in distress didn’t provoke a single
one of them to offer the hand of human kindness.

And then it got worse. The three London Underground staff who came to my
aid called an ambulance crew, as it became clear that I couldn’t stand. They
arrived, and while they gave me laughing gas to numb the pain, a crowd
formed and just gawped. It was “rubbernecking” at its most voyeuristic.

As the all-female ambulance crew and the superb Underground workers
proceeded to carry me up the stairs to the station exit, people kept trying to
push past, despite being asked to use another exit.

If you’re trying to get home, you’re in a hurry. I get that. But it was difficult
enough for the rescuers to carry a 17-stone man in a makeshift sedan chair
up the 30 steps to ground level without them having to battle through a
constant stream of people trying to squeeze past us.

What have we become when our own lives and priorities subsume the needs
of others? Have we really turned into a “walk on by” society, or was I just
unlucky?

Sure, many could think
another Fat drunk.

This is not the First time the Tubby Radio presenter
has fallen

He was on a stage, a gap was there
and fell on a Oboe.

Life in the Great Stink.

I don't think this would happen anywhere (int he UK) but London. Honestly I always enjoy visiting London but it's another world, and a ****ing strange one at that.

Actually saw an old chap in the street who had collapsed up against the shop window, two lads (known local ... characters ...) helped him sit up, went into his inside pocket, took his wallet and dropped him back to the ground and ran off.

To be fair though - a couple of other "local characters" decided to go after some vigilante justice, went off in pursuit and beat the snot out of them.

I miss drama like that.

One of my favs was when a wee old lady got her bag snatched and a socially-minded junkie went after the guy and hit him in the back with an actual flying kick and put him in hospital . MORTAL KOMBATTT.

Best part was that the wee lady just said "Aw cheers son" and went on her way when she got her bag back .

Talking of characters two builders had a guy with them from Ireland

They stopped at a car crash and the Irish guy took the man’s rings and wallet, I think they were shocked or scared to say anything to him

So am I the only one that offers to help carry a babies buggy or a woman’s suitcase up the stairs in London?

I wonder if it's your manner when you do it Zizu because I open/hold doors (not just for women, for everyone, because it's just polite) and I've never experienced anything but a smile and a thank you from literally anyone male or female .

Maybe it's pretty-privilege because I'm a charming rogue & chad?

But yeah most people hold the door open for people coming to the door behind them, male or female surely?

Yeah, the more people around, the less someone is likely to help.

They think someone else is likely to do it, but that means no-one does.

I think he was unlucky, my aunt fell over in the street and several people helped her up and a doctor passing in a car stopped to help, that was Wimbledon though, maybe a better class of person
