Default What’s the worst thing…

… (that you’re comfortable sharing) that you’ve overheard someone say about you, and did you ever confront the person over it?

Honestly can't say I've heard anything as an adult.

When I was about 15 and hadn't had a proper girlfriend yet, I heard someone refer to me as "an untapped resource" ... Which I guess could be taken as flattering, but boy did I play that line over and over in my head!

TBF I was a tall & sexy bugger but quite quiet and shy as a kid/early teen (if you can believe that). Then my family descended further into chaos and for whatever reason I became a cocky, elitist little arsehole in response. Objectively I was ****ing horrible but it worked out much better socially . Confidence is key, I guess.

Luckily I am NONE of those things now .

I know I’ve been happy to usurp a big role in keeping the forum ticking along with decent threads over the years but to be looking at the General Chat board and see it filled with threads which are mostly mine is very concerning. Where are the creative, interesting threads from other posters at?

Luckily, ey? I bet the ladies were more fond of you when you weren’t being a cocky so-and-so. Nice guys don’t necessarily finish last at all. It’s just about the initial stage of getting laid in the first place as a young adult that the lines can be blurred but long-term someone who’s confident in themselves but quietly so is more of a catch than some Jack-the-lad whose entire personality is football, football, football, more footie and having a high body-count but without hesitating to slag-shame girls with half that count.

God knows where exactly it comes from but I do know it's originally like an American/NYC thing.

Why do people think it's OK to ask someone that as well. I'd be saying **** off if anyone ever asked me that!

Yeah, I get what you mean. We've all (not literally but you know) been awkward teenagers/early 20-somethings trying to figure out how experienced we are on the field comparatively but I've only ever tuned out completely for the most part whenever someone I don't know has insisted on telling me their exact body-count and how they're going to get it up on a Thursday night while they're cheating on their girlfriend. I just could not care less about their sexual business but do hope those girls find someone who'll actually regard them in the right way and not just as steady tap-ins for a midnight bang.

A lot of the way young lads and blokey blokes talk about women is distasteful and disrespectful. The worst is when they talk about women as a homogenous conglomerate who are just sex objects rather than fully-fleshed people with distinct personalities. People are too diverse and varied to try and condense everything about them and their worth to things like gender. I actually hate people who do that.

“Women are this, women are that.” Does that include your mum, Judge Judy, the Queen of England (God rest her soul), your local barmaid, your Barclays customer-service assistant at the other end of the ’phone, your pharmacist or GP?

I hate the pathologisation of trans people (sorry, Oliver_W) so I’m not even trying to bark up that particular tree but on a serious note a lot of trans.-guys actually have borderline personality disorder and when it’s unchecked and untreated nonsense like this can so easily pop through. So lacking in anything like a stable sense of self-identity and engulfing themselves in what they do feel comfortable identifying themselves with on a level can lead to all sorts of over-sensitive fragilities and offense-taking that make it hard for biological women to thrive in their own spaces. And it’s regrettable. Really, really peak. When’s this madness going to end?

At the very least, I'm firmly of the opinion that anyone who claims Elliot Page is not unwell, has not looked at Elliot Page recently, or listened to Elliot Page talk. Frankly whoever started cutting that poor soul up instead of getting them help should be in prison.

What's wrong with wanting to be like Dexter Morgan?

Seriously though I've overheard some things about myself quite a few times when I was at School.

A lot of it being Homophobia, and one particular case about a girl allegedly having a crush on me.

That's about all I can remember.

To answer my own question, really, there was incident upon incident 2-ish years ago (most recently) but I was always one or two steps ahead. I’m not going to curse out the people in writing any more than I already have but yeah. Me ever forgiving them is probably not an option, let’s just put it like that.

How do you mean re. homophobia, Mock?

Oh really stupid stuff like liking "girly" things makes me gay, or not openly flirting with some of the girls in my class would basically get Homophobic remarks that they didn't think that I'd hear.

Tbf though I'm sure that a lot of the people that said stuff like that about me have probably matured a lot over the years.

Yeah, when you have attuned, sharp ears, you hear a lot more than people want you to but when you haven’t done anything to people like that and they’re insulting you in your presence you have every right to know. You go somewhere else and be a bit more discreet if you don’t want someone to hear you through the wall or other side of the room.

I have fabulous hearing plus the ability to tune into any conversation in the staffroom

To be fair it’s usually a load of nonsense and I wear earphones and tune into
TalkSport to drain or the conversations

The stuff some of us have overheard about ourselves isn’t really a smiling matter, Zizu.
