This does not make sense.
![]() [Graham Thorpe took his own life after several years battling anxiety and depression - believing his wife and children were 'better off without him', his bereft family revealed today. The left-handed Surrey batsman, a talisman for England and hero for many who grew up watching cricket in the 1990s, died aged just 55. Mr Thorpe, a father-of-four, was seriously ill in hospital in May 2022 after trying to kill himself. He made a recovery but took his own life on Sunday.] [Mrs Thorpe said today: 'Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better. He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life'.] Was it a Money thing that his wife and kids are better off with him gone? ![]() Better days 2007 [Graham would find love again with his second wife Amanda. Pictured here with their daughters Kitty and Emma. Thorpe is survived by her and his four children] https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...e-reveals.html |

…depression/severe anxiety isn’t something that makes sense any more than other illnesses…some reports are saying that he suffered depression/anxiety for a few years and some are saying many years…but for however long, he obviously felt overwhelmed to the point of taking his own life…it’s very, very sad…

He made an attempt on his life back in 2022 apparently too.
His depression was obviously terrible and he saw no other way out. Dreadfully sad - his poor family ![]()

I have fought against those very things since I was a teenager .. thankfully despite having many dark thoughts over the decades.. I never acted on them and they passed relatively fast . Its so difficult to avoid feeling like this and real sad thing is that you get used to the dark times and they become the norm . Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro |

Genuinely sorry to hear that @Zizu.
I feel so sorry for Graham Thorpe, a big, strong man struggling with this dreadful disease. How awful for him to see no other way out. And how awful for his family. |

How awful, I had thought he fell ill of natural causes a couple of years ago and his death would be linked to that but it turns out that severe depression just had a hold on him that whole time
Cricket can be a very difficult sport I think with the long tours away and the hyper focus on individuals. Only good news is a lot more players are talking about it these days |

Sky News Text :
[Metro reports on an inquest hearing how England cricket legend Graham Thorpe asked his wife to help him end his life as he struggled with his mental health. The 55-year-old died on the morning of 4 August, 2024 . His widow Amanda Thorpe later said he had taken his own life.] ![]() |

It's such a sad situation tbh.
I don't know what else to say without taking the thread off-topic and getting possibly controversial. But I do hope that his family have been able to cope over the last year.

He suffered anxiety and depression after losing his position as a TV pundit … sadly we may see more of this in the future as our experienced football pundits are steadily being replaced by unqualified/ inexperienced/ incompetent ( in some instances) female pundits/ co-commentators !

Still not sure what female commentary has to do with someone committing suicide. We were hoping you’d come back less misogynistic, but I guess there’s no changing some people.

Fear not … I am not staying Just dipping my feet as this story angers me Re read my post a few times to get clarification .. apologies if English isn’t your first language . Tell you what … I will try again He fell into a deep depression after losing his job as a tv pundit … Currently scores of ex male players are being sacked / replaced/ marginalised due to the constant box ticking where they are using the same useless female pundits to work on the men’s football matches .. they also work on the females games as well though it only works one way as they rarely feature a male expert on women’s football We have already lost guys like Graeme Souness , Matt le Tiss , Phil Thompson .. with Roy Keane apparently quitting soon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Zizu; Yesterday at 05:46 PM. |

It’s more honourable to just say you don’t like women you’re not attracted, related or married to than to pin a guy’s suicide on female sports commentators (even when you think you’re being indirect and subtle about that allusion).

Fact is .. he lost his job as a pundit … which ultimately led to his suicide That very thing is happening now , more and more frequently .. due to the proliferation of female ‘cough’ experts taking more and more of the available jobs Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Last edited by Zizu; Yesterday at 07:46 PM. |

You are entitled to your opinion on it Zizu. I just dont think a thread about a man taking his own life is the place to use it as a platform to complain about women in sport commentaray/punditry especially when he lost his job through his own actions. It has absolutely no bearing on why Graham Thorpe took his life.

Well it could have a serious effect on many of the guys being unfairly displaced by women Thorpe fell into a deep depression immediately after losing his pundit’s role Suicide in sportsmen is rife and rising Surely that’s a concern ? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This thread is specifically about Graham Thorpe though and he had his own demons that he was dealing with. Blaming women in this thread just seems a little distasteful to me. As I said you are entitled to your opinion but Graham Thorpes death whilst contributed to losing his job also was directly affected by Civid lockdowns as his wife has said. None of which had anything to do with women.

Ah, there it is again. “Obtuse.” Your go-to buzz-word whenever anyone disagrees with you or calls out your sexism.
