Research has found children from first-cousin marriages are more likely to
suffer birth defects and developmental problems.

3 days ago Wes Streeting The Health Secretary called for an apology after an
NHS website suggested there are benefits to first-cousin marriage, despite the
known increased risk of birth defects.

He said “First-cousin marriages are high risk and unsafe, we see the genetic
defects it causes, the harm that it causes.

Research, including from the long-running Born in Bradford study, has found
children from first-cousin marriages are more likely to have speech and
language difficulties, less likely to reach a “good stage of development” and
have more GP practice appointments.

I’m not shocked he married his cousin, no. It’s quite traditional for families from Southern India.

I can’t speak for him or people of his heritage, but I know people from families of that heritage that have been disowned by their families for being gay or refusing to an arranged marriage.

The way he was speaking about it, he sounded like he’d caved to his family’s wishes and is now trapped and lost. He seemed very dejected.

A bit shocked he's a dad, but only really because parents usually make a song and dance about it which he didn't do. Marrying your cousin sounds iffy tho but I think it's normal in Indian culture

But, yeah, cousin marriage should not be normalised in the UK. Not all things are ok just because they happen in another part of the world.

Did he say it was his first cousin? Obviously not normal in Western society but a pretty normal thing in India I think. Obviously I wouldn't be in favour of it but it's normal in his world and what he would have grown up with

I don't believe it's illegal to marry your cousin here, probably because our royal family did it all the time. When Charles married Diana that was seen as a break with tradition and them widening the gene pool. It definitely seemed to have some mixed results

It's actually not all that common in India and is mainly concentrated in certain regions and certain peoples. It's much more common in Pakistan and in Muslim families generally

I feel sorry for his wife tbh, he clearly has no affection for her and it doesn't seem like he has that much for his child

Didn’t he also say something about working or associating with Dua Lipa as well - I don’t see that happening either .

There are concerns as to possible health issues with children but first cousins CAN marry legally in the UK.
