X FACTOR hopeful Joe McElderry may be favourite to win the competition – but he’s taking it all in his stride.

The 18-year-old from South Shields said: “I’d heard that, but I’m not paying attention to it. It doesn’t mean anything. I’m just keeping my head down – it could all change tomorrow.

“I’ve got as good a chance as anyone.”

Last weekend, Joe received his first criticism from the judges, with Simon Cowell saying he had “as much Latin flair as a dolphin”, but it doesn’t seem to bother the performing arts student.

“You’ve got to have some bad comments,” Joe said. “It would be pointless otherwise.

“I wouldn’t say they were negative, you’ve just got to take them on board. You can’t have all good comments and complain when you get bad ones.”

Last week’s big band performance to Sway was one of Joe’s favourite performances.

“I liked last weekend, doing the dancing and everything, but I’ve enjoyed all my performances, because I think they have all been different.

“This week should be good. It’s rock week, so expect something different again. I’m the last person you would call a rock star, so it’s a challenge, but I like a challenge and I’ve really thrown myself into it.”

A national newspaper this week printed a story saying Joe accidentally hit fellow contestant Lucie Jones in the face with a tambourine.

But is there any truth in it?

“We were in rehearsals in the studio to do Sunday’s routine, and Rachel (Adedeji) dropped her tambourine and it skimmed Lucie’s leg. I don’t know where the story came from.

“There’s no animosity. Lucie’s great and everyone’s fine.”

Elsewhere in the rumour mill, the press has been focusing on Joe’s weight loss, but it wasn’t to become a popstar, as some reports are suggesting.

“I lost weight because I wanted to be fit and healthy for myself,” he said.

And what about the story of a crush on his mentor Cheryl Cole?

Joe said “I don’t know where that came from, but who doesn’t fancy Cheryl Cole? She’s fantastic.

“She’s a brilliant mentor; she’s always checking up on us. When it comes to song choices, we discuss it, but she has the final decision.

“But for her, it’s all about making us feel comfortable. She likes giving us a challenge, but generally she just wants to make sure we’re comfortable with what we’re doing.”

Apart from Cheryl and the rest of the judges, Joe’s already come face to face with plenty of stars, including having masterclasses with Robbie Williams, Whitney Houston and Candadian Michael Bublé.

So who’s left him feeling the most starstruck?

“That would have to be Whitney Houston. The comments I got from her were amazing and she’s a superstar.

“It’s so strange when the celebrity guests say they like me.”

And what about twins John and Edward?

“I feel sorry for them,” said Joe. “People need to leave them alone.

“They’re really nice people. I think everyone secretly loves them!”

Yeah seems that way, but I dont rate neither of them, Llyod is a slightly better singer that j+E but j+E performace outweighs his singing a tad for me. But really they ought to be the bottom 2 next week and both sent packing :joker:
The rest are all good singers and can preform, shouldnt be jepordised a space in the finale by those 2 acts.
