Prior to Saturday night’s live show performance, we caught up with teen heartthrob Joseph McElderry at the Wembley studios, to discuss his hopes and expectations going into the first live show.

“We checked out the set for the first time today and it’s amazing! To see it up close makes everything seem so real!” he continued: “I’m proper excited about my performance, because I’m confident with the song – my preparations have gone really well and hopefully that will shine through.”

According to Joe, his mid-week appointment with Robbie Williams proved a massive help when it came to practicing his song, No Regrets, made famous by the man himself.

“Of course it was nerve racking meeting Robbie, especially as I was singing one of his songs, but he was so nice – and the advice he gave was great… he’s so down-to-earth.”

Robbie’s advice to Joe was to ‘do all you can to connect with the song’, but as Joe himself pointed out: “I’m only 18, so I haven’t got too many regrets from my life so far, but Robbie told me to think of a situation where the lyrics might apply, and then perform the song through my eyes.

“He said I can portray all the emotion the song needs through my eyes, ‘just stand there and let the audience come to you’, that’s what he said to me, so hopefully I can put his advice into action when I get out there and perform.”

Joe admitted that the prospect of people voting for him was a little daunting but added he’d heard through the grapevine that support for him was ‘quite good’.

POP Idol Will Young is betting on Geordie hopeful Joe McElderry winning this year’s X Factor.

The chart-topper says he believes the South Shields teenager will be the dark horse of the competition.

Will helped put Joe, 18, through to the final 12 of the X Factor when he joined the contestant’s mentor Cheryl Cole in Morocco as the final six ‘boys’ were whittled down to three.

Now Will, 30, says he is going to lay on a bet that Joe will walk away with the £1m recording contract before Christmas.

The first of the live X Factor shows is broadcast on ITV tonight and the Pop Idol winner is confident Joe, right, will sail through.

“He is my dark horse,” Will told the Chronicle in an exclusive interview.

“I just think he’s got something. He was really nice and was very good. He had a few things he needed to work on, but I hope he listened to what I said to him.

“Watch him! I’m even going to put a bet on him – oops, I shouldn’t have said that!”

Support for X Factor Joe goes trans-Atlantic

SUPPORT for X Factor hopeful Joe McElderry is growing – and has even spread to the other side of the Atlantic.

The 18-year-old could follow in the footsteps of singer Susan Boyle, who sparked a frenzy in the US after her show-stopping appearances on Britain's Got Talent.

American Nello Pozzobon got in touch with the Gazette via e-mail to express his admiration for Joe, of Westoe, South Shields.

He said: "Joe McElderry has a lot of fans here in the USA and we're rooting for him, so will you please mail us a Go Joe! poster."

After e-mailing Mr Pozzobon one of the posters – which are springing up across South Tyneside – he immediately printed two off and put them up in his office in Bellflower, California.

He said: "Joe sure nailed it last Saturday night. He's going to take it all. Tell him we're all wishing him well, and will send a prayer up for him."

The talented teenager's popularity is soaring across Britain – and an unofficial fan site has been launched on the Internet.

More than 120 members have posted almost 1,000 messages at www.joemcelderry.com

One said: "We're behind him all the way, and there's fans from all over the world on the website."

At the beginning of the week, the Newcastle College performing arts student was third favourite to win the entire show.

However, bookmaker Betfred has upped its stakes and made him joint favourite – with odds of 4-1 – alongside Danyl Johnson.
