I didn't think I'd like it with the new doctor, the only one I've ever watched is the matt smith one, but I loved it. I got used to him pretty fast, however what made the ep for me was having the others in it.

Irrelevant to the story. She's here for the duration of series 8. Mirrors Donna/Doctor, she was only around 1 series.

I thought that was a fantastic first episode, it was so nice not to have an episode based around the Doctor running from A to B knowing every single thing in existance. The writing for Clara seems to have improved too.

Don't normally like Clara (because her character development has been a ****ing mess since the start tbf) but she was great tonight.

It'll probably click into place in 2017, I think I just about get series 5 now.

It'll take about as long as Matt smith's death in the Xmas special to work out the plot from halfway through series 6 onwards.

Moffat is basically everything that's wrong with TV writing. Campy, pretentious nonsense with too much existential bollocks thrown in. It's a ****ing kids show about aliens ffs.

I mean, I like Sherlock but mostly all of those episodes are guest-written and the acting's pretty much the only reason I enjoy it... all of the silly "mind palace" stuff and impossibly rapid dialogue that spans all Moffatisms can be done away with.

Marsh.
24-08-2014, 04:09 AM
Pretentious. That's exactly the word.

Some of his simpler ideas are the best but he thinks complicated = brilliant.

The Xmas special was answering questions from like 2 series ago in throw away lines. I don't understand who blew up the tardis, what the hell the Daleks had to do with the silence or anything really.
Farting aliens were much easier to understand.

I wasn't keen on that episode at all. I don't mind Capaldi, but you can tell the writing is still bad, I liked Matt Smith but the writing was dire, never understood much, because the story lines were so crossed etc :/ I still have no idea who the lizard lady and her lesbian wife are? Although I've seen them in it loads. :umm2:

24-08-2014, 05:38 PM
I think the problem with Clara is that she doesn't really have a story behind her and she has no motive at all. They have taken no time out to develop her character.

Rose: she was a girl who lived in South East London who was fed up of her mundane life which explained why she ended up traveling with the doctor. Her character continued to develop throughout her adventures with the doctor.

Martha: She couldn't handle all the demands of her life from her over baring mum, her sagar daddy dad, his gold digging gf and from her training as a nurse. She met the doctor and he took her on an adventure and she ended up developing feeling for him.

Donna: she originally rejected his offer to travel with the doctor and regretted it since she then spent ages looking for him and she found him she was already packed and ready to go

Amy: since being a little girl she's waited for this raggedy man in a blue box to take her on an adventure she grew up to be a crazy bitch who stanned for someone everyone thought was in her imagination except he ended up being real and he took her away.

Clara: she was a babysitter having internet problems and she called the wrong number.....

There was more character development for the companions in the classic series and that's in like the 60s

The whole point of Clara originally is that her existence was a mystery to the doctor which is why she didn't really get a whole lot of character development until the Christmas Special and why she got a lot more of a rounded personality in Deep Breath.

It's just a rumour until it's confirmed and even if that's the case it doesn't mean she can't be developed further, Martha and Donna were only around for one season and they were fully fleshed out characters.

Jamesy
26-08-2014, 12:16 PM
Clara's story came to an end in series seven for me. The whole interest of her was just the mystery of who (or what) she was. Now that we know that there's not a whole lot more to develop. We kinda learnt her whole life in a few episodes. All we can really gather from Clara now is that she struggled through the loss of her mother, with a plain life and nothing going for her. The Doctor came along and saved her from that. Although now with a job as a teacher she still wants a 'normal' life but some adventures with the Doctor too, to have some excitement in life. I'd assume the new character Danny Pink will no doubt become a love interest and that will leave her with a good happy way to leave the show. I doubt after killing Amy and Rory they will kill off Clara. I think we'll see a happier ending, maybe a bit like Martha's exit. Although you never know with Moffat, he seems to like to use death a lot.

I still like Clara, although she doesn't hit my top list of modern companions. Amy still hits the spot on that one.

Regarding the comments a few pages back, Doctor Who is just BBC/BBC Wales at the moment. Although there were talks at one point of the show moving over to BBC Worldwide. Not sure how that would affect the show but it's interesting nonetheless. I'd rather see it stay on BBC Wales personally. Doctor Who is the kind of show I like for having crap CGI, dodgy editing and cheesy moments. It's what made the classic series so loved and what makes the modern series just as loved. Even though the show has matured since 2005 it still has its moments.

Doctor Who has become the main central point for BBC Wales. It's put Wales on the map for many people, alongside Torchwood and SJA for example. I don't think BBC Wales would be anything without the DW franchise now.

Agreed, i got a DM on twitter the other day from an American and they were like 'You're in Cardiff, that's where Torchwood is!' i don't many people in America or other places in the world would know where Wales was if it wasn't for Doctor Who and the likes.

I think Capaldi is much better than Matt Smith!
I personally thought Matt Smith was awful as the Doctor...........far too young and a terrible actor!

It's probably been mentioned in this thread somewhere that the first 5 episodes of the new series were leaked online before last week's premier aired.
They're workprints though so they're in Black & White and they have "Property of BBC......" text on the top of the screen and a time clock etc..
I'd rather wait for the proper versions to air but i know a lot of the Who fanatics just can't resist the temptation!

Anyone younger than say....David Tennant, as far as i'm concerned, just doesn't suit the part of the Doctor! To play The Doctor well an actor needs a certain gravitas which Matt Smith clearly didn't possess!
I know theoretically The Doctor could appear to be any age but Matt Smith just came across as a buffoon with a disproportionately large chin and a disproportionately small talent for acting.

The best actor to ever play the Doctor was, in my opinion, Tom Baker!

Yeah. Roath Lock has been built especially for BBC Wales and the majority of the studios are dedicated to Doctor Who, and the permanent sets like the TARDIS. Not to mention they've recently built a huge complex for the Doctor Who Experience just opposite.

:suspect: Far too many Dalek episodes? We had Asylum of the Daleks back in September 2012 as the opening episode for Series 7 Part 1, then the Daleks didn't appear at all in Series 7 part 2.

They appeared in The Day of The Doctor in November 2013 as the whole story was about the time war, and then had a slight role in The Time of The Doctor at Christmas alongside some other enemies.... so really the Daleks haven't had a proper stand alone episode for a while.
