"American Horror Story" has had no shortage of casting coups in its brief history but landing Oscar winner Kathy Bates to square off with fellow Oscar winner Jessica Lange may be the biggest get yet.

TVLine reports that Bates will play Lange's friend turned enemy in the third season -- or installment -- of the ongoing miniseries. Details of the new season remain vague, but Lange is expected to play a far more glamorous role than "Asylum's" Sister Jude and the storyline will involve young love, multiple cities and multiple timelines.

Previous "Horror Story" cast members Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga and Frances Conroy are also confirmed to return.

Bates and Lange have shared the screen twice before: in 1990's "Men Don't Leave," before Bates won her Oscar for "Misery," and again in 2006's little seen indie "Bonneville" (which also starred Joan Allen -- another great actress for "Horror Story" to consider in the future).

American Horror Story will begin filming season 3 in New Orleans this summer.

The actress, who played the angel of death in American Horror Story: Asylum and appeared as maid Moira O’Hara in season one, recently confirmed production is gearing up for season 3 and she will be a part of it.

“It’s going to start up again in July or August in New Orleans, I’ll be part that and will have a fairly substantial part in it,” Conroy said. “I’ll be in 10 of the episodes of what I think will be a 13-part season.”

The actress added, “I’m waiting to see what’s written to see who I’ll be playing. I haven’t seen any scripts yet, so all I know is that it’s going to be in New Orleans and who will be involved. Beyond that, it’s a matter of waiting for the wonderful writers to create the next world for us to inhabit.”

I loved season 1, I thought season 2 was good up until the last 4 or 5 episodes, and I like the snippets I've heard about season 3, apart from the report of there being a romantic element to it, romance 9 times out of 10 are a bad thing for TV Shows as writers don't know how to handle them, but who knows they could shock me.

Some big casting news for "American Horror Story: Coven," the third season of the popular FX horror drama. Creator Ryan Murphy tweets, "Thrilled to announce Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe is joining the cast of 'American Horror Story: Coven.'"

There are no other details offered, but as we already know, Sidibe will be joining "AHS" newcomer Kathy Bates, as well as returning cast members Taissa Farmiga, Frances Conroy, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Lange. We also know the witchy season will be filming, at least in part, in New Orleans..

The Scream 4 star will appear in the FX drama's third season, subtitled Coven, according to TVLine.

Roberts has been cast as party girl Madison in the new run, which will explore the paranormal and the world of witches.

The 22-year-old recently shot Fox sci-fi pilot Delirium - but the adaptation was not picked up to series.

Her past credits include the movies The Art of Getting By (2011) and Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012).

Other stars confirmed to appear in American Horror Story: Coven are Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Gabourey Sidibe and Roberts's real-life boyfriend Evan Peters.

She's been in quite a few things I've seen. She's quite similar looking to Julia I think. You can tell they're related.

I don't think she's a bad actress. Obviously, she's had some advantages in getting into the business, with her family name, and for this part it wouldn't hurt that she's dating Evan, but I'm going to reserve judgement on her performance until I see her in the show.

For fans who cannot wait for the third season, titled "Coven," to begin, there are plenty of details to help ail the woes of the "American Horror Story" withdrawal.

As filming begins in New Orleans this week, the show is looking to cast three new recurring roles, according to Spoiler TV. For starters, Carter, a "20-something small town hunk" will beef up the season's male presence, which pales in comparison to the female dominated cast. In addition, a 20-year-old version of Gwen, Jessica Lang's character, will join the cast alongside a redheaded 20-year-old version of Ruth, Frances Conroy's character. Could these new characters hint at a flashback? Or could they have something to do with the controversial "youth serum" that will anchor the season 3 plotline?

"American Horror Story" is still searching for the actor to play Dr. David Zhong. One of the audition tapes, featuring Byron Mann from "Arrow," leaked online last month, however, has since been taken down. Dr. Zhong is described as a charming Asian doctor, and the audition tape revealed that he's working on a youth serum. It's unclear what role the serum will play in the upcoming season, but fans will find out soon enough.

In the tape, Dr. Zhong claims that the serum needs another two years before it's ready, despite a yearning character named Maude who demands to take it immediately. There are plenty of directions "Coven" could go here, but it appears as though an immature youth serum could cause detrimental side effects that could drive the show forward.


Don't see why they don't just reuse the actress from S1 for the younger version of frances conroy, I liked her :shrug:

Coven will be a massive witch-off: Salem vs. voodoo. "The witches of Salem, the smart ones, got out very early and they were none of the ones who were burned," Murphy explained. "They all gravitated toward New Orleans, where they now live, and every generation has a great witch who has the most powers of them all, and that's called the Supreme. Ms. Jessica Lange is the Supreme."

"It really is about the witches of Salem pitted against voodoo witches," he continued. "It's been a centuries-long feud and it's up to Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett to mend the fence." (Bassett is playing Marie Laveau, "the voodoo queen of New Orleans" whose real-life reign lasted from the 1820s to the 1860s.) Obviously, expect things between the witches — and non-witches — to escalate quickly. "The witches are really sort of a great allegory and metaphor for any minority group that has been persecuted and has had to go underground and, finally, is like, 'You know what? Dammit, no. We're fighting back,' so that's what they do."

It looks like Coven will be set in both the present day and the 1830s. In addition to Bassett's Laveau, Kathy Bates is playing actual historical serial killer Marie Delphine LaLaurie, a.k.a. Madame LaLaurie, who Murphy called "the most evil woman ever." LaLaurie and her third husband tortured and killed several of their slaves in New Orleans in the 1830s, and were discovered only when firefighters broke down a door and discovered their gruesome murder chamber. Ick. But Murphy promised this season would be lighter than Asylum. "It's much more buoyant and comedic and crafty than last season, which was much darker by design because it was about heavy social stuff," he said, then laughed. "Frances Conroy plays Jessica's rival from high school times."

I thought it was a brilliant first episode. It had a lot of female dominance, which I loved.

Emma Roberts was a bit of a crap choice for Madison though, it sucks that she got the part just because she's with Evan. I was wonder if Emma Roberts would've accepted the offer? She fit the bitch role perfectly in The Bling Ring, and she worked really well with Taissa.

It was really good. I loved all of the characters (Queenie:love:), even though some of them were too big for their actors. Emma and, surprisingly, Frances didn't really seem to fit into their characters IMO. idk if I'm explaining it very well, but I just didn't believe them.

An overall amazing premiere though. A lot was packed into it, so hopefully the rest of the season will keep up.

Another amazing episode. I'm hoping that they'll start linking some of this stuff together soon, cause right now they're throwing a lot of stories at us. Which is fine, as long as they're setting up the rest of the season.

And I'm glad that Lily Rabe's character made it back, although I can definitely see her clinginess being a problem later on in the season. Zoe kinda baffled me though. Kinda up and down the entire episode. She kills the frat guy like nothing, then freaks out when the cops ask about it, freaks out when she sees the body parts at the morgue, and then starts putting them together like nothing. Maybe that's part of her storyline to come?

Ratings are doing brilliantly which is nice to see. I loved last nights episode. So far the storyline(s) are quite easy to follow, which is nice after a plot heavy second season (although I loved the complex storylines in Asylum). It's pretty good so far, the cinematography is just utterly beautiful, it seems it's a totally different league to the first and second season.

I'm looking forward to how the rest of this season pans out!

Finally watched it today. I thought it was a pretty good episode. It seems as though it was more set up for future episodes but enjoyable all the same.
