Pictures on Twitter appear to show three people lying on the ground surrounded by police and paramedics.

A spokesperson could not confirm the number of casualties.

Police said the area around John Wilson Street was shut down.

Two people have reportedly been shot in Woolwich, south east London, after armed police were called to a machete attack, eyewitnesses say.

Dozens of weapons and pools of blood could be seen on the ground in John Wilson Street, where a man wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt is said to have been attacked.

Police were sent to the scene at around 2.20pm.

The immediate area has been shut down, with eyewitnesses describing the incident on Twitter as "horrific".

"I am here to give you an update about the incident that has unfolded here in Woolwich this afternoon and to give you further details of the situation and an outline of the facts as we understand them at this time.

"I can understand that this incident will cause community concerns, and I would like to reiterate that we are investigating what has taken place today.

"The MPS will investigate the circumstances that led to a man to lose his life and the IPCC, as is routine, will investigate the circumstances in which police discharged their weapons.

"There will continue to be an increased police presence in this area, and the surrounding areas this evening. That presence will continue as long as is needed.

He made a series of political statements.

One of the most surreal things in that video, is that people are stood close by watching, and even talking to the attacker, who's hands are covered in blood holding weapons. He is stood quite close to the guy filming. You'd think there would be mayhem and people would be trying to get well away from him. Strange how things actually pan out in such an incident.

A 43-year-old man is in custody on suspicion of attempted arson after reportedly walking into a mosque with a knife in Braintree, Essex.

Local MP Brooks Newmark said on this Twitter account: "Local mosque in Braintree attacked by man with knives and incendiary device. Man arrested. No one injured.

"Just met with leaders of local mosque in Braintree which was attacked this evening. Thanked local police for their swift response."

Essex Police confirmed a 43-year-old from Braintree had been arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and attempted arson after the incident in Silks Way at 7.15pm.

Meanwhile police in Kent were called to reports of criminal damage at a mosque in Canterbury Street, Gillingham, at 8.40pm.
