Cheyenne Jackson: “Will Drake, fashion icon. He’s trying to creatively reestablish himself, so he moves from New York to Los Angeles. A father, and a little desperate.”

Denis O’Hare: “I’m playing Liz Taylor, movie icon. I’m not actually playing Elizabeth Taylor, but I’m playing a person who is inspired by the awesomeness of things like Butterfield 8 and Cleopatra and eye make-up like that. "I'm directing it because I love the script so much, when we finished it I said, 'I can't give this to anybody else.' Lily Rabe is coming to that episode. And she's playing Aileen Wuornos, which is really fun and bizarre. I don't want to give too much away but I will tell you that she's at the centerpiece of that, and that's who she's playing."

The first member of Gaga's sexual trifecta is Angela Bassett. The Emmy-nominated actress is stepping into yet another sultry AHS role as Ramona Royale, a "fabulous" and wealthy actress in L.A. and frequent visitor to the Hotel Cortez.

"She's never been with a woman before," Bassett confessed to ETonline of Ramona's romantic past. "She's just very attractive to Elizabeth. There's just something about her as soon as she lays eyes on her."

Although Bassett has yet to shoot any scenes with Gaga -- Mother Monster begins filming her first murderous scene on Monday -- the actress revealed that she has a hunch for who will wear the pants in their relationship.

"She's probably going to make me her bitch," Bassett shared with a laugh. "I think she gets me to do something that I've never done before. It'll be interesting." The actress added that she's thrilled that their relationship will "contribute to the sexiness" of the season.

So what is it about Elizabeth that Ramona will find so irresistible? "I think she sees me, she gets me. She appreciates femininity, strength, beauty," Bassett explained. "She doesn't think [Ramona] needs to sell herself short by having sex with producers or anyone else other than her, but, of course, she's a different story."

It’s not every day you get a cold call from Lady Gaga, even when you’re Ryan Murphy (Glee, American Horror Story). “I was at a construction site and my phone rang,” he recalls. “I didn’t recognize the number. [I answer and] I hear ‘Please hold for Gaga.’ I think ‘Bad Romance’ was playing [while I was on hold],” he adds with a laugh. “Then she got on the phone. At first I thought it was a prank, but we then had a lovely call.” And a brief one, too, says Gaga, who’s a huge AHS fan (Freak Show was her favorite season, for the record). “I called him and I said, ‘Ryan, I wanna be on Horror Story.’ And he goes, ‘Okay.’ And that was it.”

The pop star is front and center on the fifth season of AHS, subtitled Hotel. It’s not a huge leap to connect Gaga with the spooky series. This is the same woman who wore a meat dress to the 2010 VMAs and arrived at the 2011 Grammys in a giant egg. But in recent years, the singer has shifted toward a slightly softer, safer route, collaborating on a jazz album with Tony Bennett and performing selections from The Sound of Music at the Oscars this past year. She now says that she’s ready to go back to the freaky-deaky figure whose fans fittingly call themselves Little Monsters. “I’ve just been weeping while I’m here because I have returned to something I’ve believed in so much, which is the art of darkness,” says the singer. “It’s not something that everyone understands, but, for the people that do — Horror Story fans, my fans — there is a true connection between us, and it’s a language within itself.”

While bedbugs might be the biggest concern for most real-life travelers, AHS’ Hotel Cortez unleashes a whole slew of far more frightening vacation terrors. Built in 1930 by the rich and charming but deeply psychotic James March (Evan Peters), the beautiful art-deco hotel is, in actuality, a labyrinthine structure built to hide March’s murderous activities (think dead ends, secret rooms, endless shafts).

Set in present day, though, the Cortez is acquired by Gaga’s Countess, a glamorous socialite who attends art openings and fashion shows and maintains her looks not from a steady diet of kale but from imbibing human blood. Murphy doesn’t like to call it vampirism. “I prefer the term ‘ancient blood virus,’ ” Murphy says of her affliction. “It’s really a form of hemophilia, in a way.” The Countess is also insatiable when it comes to love and sex, which sets up a macabre love triangle between her, the similarly blood-hungry Donovan (Matt Bomer) and the newly turned male model Tristan (Finn Wittrock).

Also gravitating around the world of the Cortez are Ramona Royale (Angela Bassett), an actress/former lover of The Countess’ seeking revenge; Iris (Kathy Bates), Donovan’s mother and the front desk clerk; Liz Taylor (Denis O’Hare), a cross-dresser nicknamed by The Countess; Hypodermic Sally (Sarah Paulson), a junkie and friend of The Countess; Detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley), a cop investigating a murderer named the Ten Commandments Killer; and The Addiction Demon, a creature in the vein of Rubberman or Bloodyface, who has no eyes or mouth but does wield a nasty, conical drillbit dildo.

With bloodsuckers, killers, and Gaga, AHS will launch its boldest, goriest, sexiest iteration when Hotel premieres Oct. 7 on FX. It also marks the first without star Jessica Lange, who bowed out after last year’s Freak Show. “There’s a chance to do something Jessica would not have done,” admits Murphy. “So it’s a different tone. But it’s still the show — make no mistake. I think it has what people want.” Adds Sarah Paulson, who has appeared in all five AHS versions: “There’s something about this season that’s got real heat to it. It’s pulsating. Every season has a different tone or a color. And I think this year for sure would be blood red.”

Each season of American Horror Story tackles a different horror genre and this year’s iteration, Hotel, focuses on vampirism … well, kind of. “I prefer the term ‘ancient blood virus,’” co-creator Ryan Murphy tells EW. “It’s not vampires.” He adds, “It’s really a form of hemophilia in a way. There’s no capes and fangs.”

Lady Gaga’s character, The Countess, is afflicted with this virus as are her lovers, Donovan (Matt Bomer) and Tristan (Finn Wittrock), which causes the infected to crave human blood. “Around the middle of the season, we sort of explore the origins of all that and her character and where [the virus] comes from,” teases Murphy.

Since they don’t have fangs, The Countess and Donovan kill with their chainmail gloves as seen in the above photo and on EW’s new AHS cover; the nails are razor sharp and handy when slitting throats.

The first hour will feature the return of AHS alum Lily Rabe, playing serial killer Aileen Wurnos. The episode will be focused around the dinner party from hell at the Hotel Cortez, involving guest and detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley). Teases co-creator Ryan Murphy, “The biggest serial killers of all time all come to the hotel. Gacey. Aileen. John Lowe’s invited to a devil’s night dinner. He thinks someone is pulling a huge prank on him. It’s the biggest serial killers of all time in a room with him and he has to figure who is trying to make him lose his mind.”

I just love a good whodunit, I definitely missed that aspect in Coven and Freak Show (well, I thought we had one in Coven with Cordelia's attack but then it was just some random witch hunter we never met so I don't count it :laugh:).

Of course, it's a horror show rather than a mystery show so I don't necessarily expect one each year, it's just a nice bonus if there is. I do like a side of mystery with my horror (well, with my everything tbh). :laugh:

The Bloody Face reveal was one of my favourite episodes, it was so nightmarish and unsettling. :love:

I just seen the main credits and i found it really interesting on how the ten commandments are in there and the umholy "virgin" type figure wearing white. I think that this season's main focus will be religion/demons/devil/god/end of days.

I also think i figured out who lady gaga's Elizabeth really is. she isn't just some "vampire" she's Lilith. it all adds up, with the kidnapping of children, sexual deviant, female demon/vampire. I think that demonic looking thing in that wedding dress is her true form.

Elizabeth or Lilith is the mother of demons, a "mother monster"..explains why there are demons running around the hotel and ghosts of dead killers being brought from hell itself to torment the detective. another interesting fact about the lilith legend that my family believes in is that she replaces the child's soul with that of a demon and for three days you have to stay up watching over the baby so lilith or one of her minions won't touch the baby.

So what is the countess's agenda? my guesses are that she is collecting souls for something..probably for some apocalyptic prophecy. that also explains why this season is connected to murder house. She is something planned with the antichrist child. I'm not completely sure on what it is but i have a few ideas. maybe it is to open the "hellmouth" underneath the hotel, what better place then a evil, twisted place as the hotel? it's unholy ground. perfect for someone like the Countess. maybe the reason Mr. March built the hotel at that site because he seen something, or he was told to build it by demons. maybe, the end of the world can't begin until this happens. he can't rule without an army of demons on his side.

the question is why is she going through all this trouble by doing this besides being evil? easy. revenge. God banished her and cursed her, I know Ryan will have his own take on the legend so she was probably cursed with the ancient blood disease/vampirism and not to be able to have children or find true love.

I'm annoyed that i read this bc the season will not be this good so I'm going to be disappointed

Oooh, GaGa being Lilith would be awesome. I loved Supernatural's and True Blood's versions of her so I'm always down to see more takes on her, she's a great basis for a villainous character.

The episode opens with two Swedish girls visiting the hotel, and getting less than exceptional service from American Horror Story regular Kathy Bates, who plays the receptionist at the Hotel. After a series of violent crimes, a police detective (Wes Bentley), is called to the Hotel to investigate. From there, Bentley is established as the protagonist, as we explore his family life and work at the police force. A series of graphic scenes take over that give the viewers a good insight as to what is to come with the series. This includes a six-minute scene with Matt Bomer and the stand out star of the season, Lady Gaga, that is similar to a music video with little to no dialogue, yet still intriguing and attention-grabbing action. One of my initial concerns with the premiere was that the only linear story telling and season long story arc was going to center around Bentley and his family. However, the second half of the episode delves into some of the residents of the Hotel that commit some of these scary crimes, and shows how they ended up getting to the Hotel. This was a pleasant surprise, as originally I feared that the season would be filled with one note horrible encounters with little to no background on information on these specific characters.

Bit of a daft assumption.

Every season apart from season 1 has focussed on a large group of people that have all come from different places (the asylum, the academy, the freak show) and end up in a place together and they've always delved into their history and fleshed out the characters and told us how they got to where they are in the show. So I wouldn't have expected any different about all the characters staying at the hotel.

First review! Has a couple of spoilers so I'll put it in one just for the complainers :hee:

After a disappointing fourth season, “American Horror Story” returns to FX with “Hotel,” which spends most of the debut episode building and introducing characters.

The always spectacular Kathy Bates plays Iris, the front desk clerk and gatekeeper to the Cortez Hotel. She’s been working there for 20 years, and reminds me of R. M. Renfield in “Dracula” (being that she’s a human working for a hotel filled with vampires).

Speaking of vampires, it takes quite a bit of time before Lady Gaga is introduced. She’s “The Countess,” a seductive, eccentric and methodical vampire who owns the Cortez Hotel. Yet, even with the power of Gaga’s performance, Sarah Paulson, who plays Sally, a junkie and friend of The Countess, has the most provocative character of them all.

And while the first episode doesn’t introduce James March (Evan Peters) – who built labyrinth of a hotel in 1930 – we get a taste of the secret rooms when kids appear and vanish, with one containing a kiddie party haven used to seduce even children.

The most exciting thing about each season’s debut episode is the visual introduction to the characters and locations. While “Freak Show” may have been the most vibrant and colorful of them all, “Hotel” features stunning costume designs and set pieces that are nothing short of spectacular.

But, what I found most intriguing about “Hotel” is that it appears FX and Ryan Murphy have taken their gloves off. Being that “Hotel” is the fifth season, I don’t think the filmmakers have any fear of losing committed viewers. Thus, they have taken everything to the edge of gluttony, which is ironically part of the underlying story-arc.

It appears many of the “Hotel” victims are sinners, as teased in the below opening title sequence. And with that comes junkies, criminals and the insane. “Hotel” gets graphic with the drug use, takes sex/rape to an entirely new level with a conical drillbit dildo, and even has a blood orgy that’s uncomfortably erotic. Everything about “Hotel” is about excess, and there’s no denying that everyone involved is ready to take it all the way (****, the season opens with Detective John Lowe (Wes Bentley) discovering a man, with his eyes gouged out and his tongue removed, glued inside a woman who has been impaled).

The one thing that I love about the “American Horror Story” franchise is that, much like a video game, it’s all about the ride. And while the end game may be inconsequential (I have’t liked any of the season finales), Ryan Murphy and company have set the stage for a monstrous fifth season that’s boasting its ability to be unapologetic from sex to the drugs and violence.

If I went to a hotel and saw Kathy Bates standing there ready to check me in, I would probably dash out the door. The beautiful Swedish tourists should have gone with their instincts because Hotel Cortez is the type of hotel you check in and never check out.

This season of American Horror Story, AHS Hotel, features an all-star cast including the infamous Lady Gaga. Lady Gaga is haunting and brilliant in her role as Countess Elizabeth, who is twisted and blood thirsty. Is she some type of modern day vampire? Only time will tell as the season unfolds.

The story centers around the eerie Hotel Cortez and the eclectic occupants such as: Hypodermic Sally played by Sarah Paulson and Liz Taylor played by Denis O’Hare. Their paths cross with cop John Lowe (Wes Bentley) who is looking into a series of murders that seem to be all connected. Flashbacks reveal surprising truths, and all of the unexpected twists and turns in the story will have you on the edge of your seats. Be prepared to be scared!


Hearkening back to the original AHS offering (Murder House), the initial installment of Hotel is determined to make you wonder which characters are alive, which characters are dead, which characters are manifestations of some ill-born id and which characters are just Murphy's friends dropping by for a day or two of what I'm sure must be some of Hollywood's finest craft services....

Outside of the wacky camera angels, stomach-churning editing, pulsing plasmas and polymorphous perversity, the best reason to watch American Horror Story is always to see what fun games Murphy and Falchuk have given the actors to play, though compared with Freak Show, this is emerging as less of a goofy acting showcase.

Lady Gaga, effectively stepping in for Jessica Lange, has gotten most of the early publicity for her extended acting debut. After an hour, it remains to be seen how Gaga will handle extended dialogue or emotional volatility, but she's initially just being asked to embody a visual conceit, which she does convincingly. She struts in high fashion with confidence, she does near-nudity without self-consciousness and she has a feral resemblance to Nosferatu star Max Schreck, which might seem accidental except that several characters attend a cemetery screening of the F.W. Murnau classic.

Los Angeles' Hotel Cortez is a dowdy old beauty where terrible things happen -- vampiric things, and much worse. You don't want to look under the beds, or sleep on them either. (It does not get a lot of recommendations on Yelp). Ethel Darling (Kathy Bates) runs the front desk, with an assist from cross-dresser Liz Taylor (Denis O'Hare). Ethel's son Donovan (Matt Bomer) is a hotel habitue, as is Hypodermic Sally (Sarah Paulson). The Cortez's boss is the Countess Elizabeth (Lady Gaga). She is a sartorial piece of work, accessorized with a metallic hand that does bad stuff.

A detective, John Lowe (Wes Bentley), is mysteriously summoned to the Cortez. Why? Could it have something to do with a series of horrific murders in L.A.?

Let's talk about one Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta -- you know her as Gaga -- because that's all anyone coming to the fifth season of "AHS" will want to talk about anyway. As the Countess Elizabeth, she's a voluptuary and old soul -- possibly an ancient soul -- with vermilion lips that look like a smear of blood. Or maybe that's just because they are smeared with blood. When she first drifts onto screen, the impulse is to gawk, then shield your eyes. She's a bright white light that punctures the gloom, much as that exotic hand accessory of hers punctures throats. Gaga fits perfectly into Ryan Murphy's tableau of horror-meets-sex-meets-death. Her eroticism may be lethal but also Gagaesque, abetted by a pair of nipple shields that look expensive and painful. How fitting Gaga waited until "AHS" to make her TV series debut.

Now about that series: It will forcibly repel some viewers, disturb the rest. That is the plan, after all. "AHS" never bought into the idea that less is more, but that more is more. Much more is even better. The season opener is downright operatic with the gore, and more indebted to the hotel horror of Eli Roth ("Hostel") than to the Coen Brothers' "Barton Fink." If hardly a quantum advance over the fourth season, it makes the first look like a sitcom.



Of course, getting to one of the rooms requires dealing with a not-very-helpful desk clerk (Kathy Bates, naturally) and her sidekick, played by Denis O’Hare, who goes by the name Liz Taylor. The strange doings at the hotel, and an anonymous phone call, bring unwanted attention from a local detective (Wes Bentley). Not surprisingly, he’s haunted by his past.

As for Gaga, she spends much of her time with the equally striking Matt Bomer, and the two are introduced via a wordless sequence in which they lure a young couple back to the hotel, where the duo resides. In keeping with “American Horror Story’s” habit of sexualizing violence, and vice versa, suffice it to say that nobody should expect to get their security deposit back.

Whatever the shortcomings, the extraordinarily well-timed addition of Gaga to the mix should render any naysaying moot, practically speaking, establishing this as a sort-of event that plenty of people will feel obligated to check out (or in). Viewed that way, Gaga’s primary role is to help bait the hook, at one point describing the hotel to an outsider by purring, “Maybe this place is special.”


Not only is the season premiere of Hotel arguably the best episode so far of the entire AHS series, but Gaga slays in this role—in every way. Her opening scene with Bomer, set to the song "Tear You Apart" by She Wants Revenge, is one you will never forget after watching—which you will do with your jaw unhinged, dangling somewhere around your knees.
As one might expect, those shocking-yet-artful (people always say that; in this case it's true) sex scenes haven't rattled Gaga one bit—and she's actually asked for some of the scenes to go further. "In a strange way, I actually almost prefer to watch myself in a love scene," she reveals. "I know it has to look convincing and real." As her co-star (and sex-scene partner) Cheyenne Jackson put it, "[Gaga] doesn't flinch. She goes there. Like right off the bat. She said, 'It has to be real or I can't do it.'"


American Horror Story: Hotel” is not a quirky, layered complex tale recounting a true crime like FX’s “Fargo,” or a brothers-in-arms gore-fest like “The Bastard Executioner.” Instead, years of cultivating the best talent – both below and above the line – have made the Murphy-Falchuk annual fright franchise a dazzling display of how television can compete with cinema for capturing a mood and telling a yarn that might be completely otherworldly, but feels believable and real. The art department (includes the production designer, set decorators and construction teams) are collectively as much a shining star as the stellar AHS cast.

The venue is perfect, the guest list sublime and the tunes are rocking and ready to make your smallest apprehensions about staying at any hotel blow up with the fright of a million little monsters.

American Horror Story: Hotel seems to have all the ingredients of a memorable horror classic.

Driven by a great goth sound track of funereal dirges by Joy Division and Bauhaus, the fifth incarnation of the anthology series features an unforgettable performance by Lady Gaga - at turns stunning and creepy, beautiful and grotesque - as a vampire countess who rules over an assortment of monstrous atrocities at a gorgeous art deco hotel in Los Angeles called the Hotel Cortez.

The overall picture is just a little too busy, too dense. The first episode of Hotel - the only one available to critics - is so busy trying to set up its divergent cast of characters it ends up being confusing and exhausting.

It's a maddening mess the following episodes need to untangle. And I hope they do so in a gentler fashion. AHS has never been afraid to pile on the gore, but the violence in Hotel is excessive even by the show's standards.

Murphy and Falchuk have yet to disappoint. Despite its many apparent problems, Hotel has the potential to become another AHS winner
