Survivor 31: Cambodia [Second Chance]

A very reliable Survivor source has revealed what he knows about Season 31 (it was originally going to be 32 but they'll just switch the order of S31/S32 airing). There'll be no winners returning. Apparently America will be voting on who they want to return from a selection of one-time players Kinda similar to BB7 All Stars with production picking some and the public picking some.

Here are the castaways short-listed for the season, and who we will probably be voting on unless anything changes. There will be 40 to vote from, so there are still a few more names to come.

She was in the top 4 for fan favorite during her season losing out to Kim again. She has more twitter folllowers then any of the girls on this list. She got second place in her Miss Survivor campaign beating Kim this time but losing to RC who campaigned her heart out for that. I am sure there are probably more examples I could come up with but she easily is one of the more liked females especially compared to some of the weak choices on this list.

As a whole the One World cast is pretty forgettable so I don't really put much stock into her top 4 placement meaning anything, especially now in 2015. Everyone forgets One World and certainly everyone forgets Chelsea.

One World wasn't a good season that is true. But it was still watched by 9 million people and she did make it to the end. Compare that to some of these people who lasted only a couple episodes and there is no doubt in my mind that Chelsea would have gotten voted in ahead of most of the females on this list.

eh, even then I'm not entirely sure. I think people like Kelly, Ciera (ugh), Tasha, and Shirin (surely she must be one of the S30 females, no?) would be pretty much guaranteed votes in and after that it gets really grey. Sabrina seems like someone with a broad appeal but I'm not certain that I trust the public to vote two black women in. I don't know, I guess I don't trust in this Chelsea fanbase as much as you do :shrug: regardless though, casuals can't remember anything earlier than, like, Cagayan probably, so it's all going to depend on what CBS puts out there before voting opens.

I do agree that Ciera, Tasha and Shirin will be voted in. I am nervous for Kelly Wiglesworth I hope the casuals dont screw that one up. I think she will probably make it in but you never know I guess. I don't forsee Sabrina making it in especially with Tasha and Shirin on the roster. The women's side just worries me because there's a bunch of lackluster choices that I have no desire to see again.

For the men there are of course a lot of guys I would like to see and some that I don't want to see but for the most part at least I would be okay with *almost* any combination that America decides on.

She knows her dad isn't the reason she left and admitted that on her Survivor Oz interview, but it's a good way to snag votes and she's run a successful campaign that will hopefully attract the casuals, and then once she's on and running s31 the fans will be spellbound.

Over the next few weeks Kass betrayed our confidence and began actively attempting to get us in trouble over really silly issues that no one in production or casting actually cared about. But she kept trying anyways. It became somewhat of a joke. On RHAP she told some strange and silly lies about our meetup in Malibu and also claimed that Shirin was feeding her spoilers. I still to this day can't figure out why she lied about what happened on the day when I met her and her husband. The only thing I can think of is that I started becoming friendly with the Lad shortly thereafter and that Kass considers his friends to be her enemies. Kass eventually crossed a line that I don't feel comfortable discussing here. Needless to say there were repercussions for a third party.

It's irksome that some of the commenters in this thread have accused me of being bitter. Clearly Kass's antics had no impact on my or Shirin's standing with SEG or our chances of being invited back. I want to see her play again, and I think she is one of the greatest characters in the show's history. It's just that given the friendliness she showed me initially - warm messages, invitations to attend events with her and her family - I expected her to observe the boundary between the game and real life. She didn't, and her actions have negatively impacted my impressions of her as a person.

I've heard about this sort of stuff happening before. I've heard that the first vote in a recent returning player season was at least partially motivated by similar circumstances (snitching). That said, it still baffles me as to why someone as important to the franchise as Kass would feel so motivated to go out of her way to meddle in the lives of a couple of overwhelmed newbies who had turned to her for guidance. The Dirty have always tried - with varying degrees of success - to leave the game out on the island and to support our fellow castaways as much as possible off of it. I guess I was naive to think that she might share that ideal with us.

When we spoke with host Jeff Probst on day one of filming Survivor: Cambodia—Second Chance, he said there was “chaos and scrambling out of the gate.” Probst also mentioned how CBS approached him the day after the live vote reveal, asking when they could do this again.

Well, Probst may not have an exact timeframe in mind—but he does say “we would definitely do it again.” He also talks about the risks and rewards of turning voting power over to the fans, explains what makes these returning players so different from previous ones, and drops a clue as to something we may see at the start of the show. Read on for part two of our chat from Cambodia.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How is a returning players season vibe different? You’ve done a bunch of all new newbie seasons in a row and now you have these returnees. How does it feel different to you when filming?
JEFF PROBST: That’s a great question, because typically it’s different in that returning players are more of a pain in the ass. And it always disappoints me that they try to push us around when we’re saying, “Look, we know you know the deal. We get it. And you’re our stars. That’s why we invited you back. But don’t push so hard. Let’s just do this with the same respect.” And they typically don’t. It doesn’t mean we don’t invite them back. We love them. It comes with the turf.

What’s interesting is, and what I will remind every other returning player is, this group has been so kind and courteous. We sent them on this huge journey though old, historic parts of Cambodia, and they were smiling every part of it because some of them have been waiting 15 years. And so they don’t take it for granted, and they appreciate it, and they remember, “Wow, this is a big deal. There are 350 people out here creating this adventure for me!” And I will remind future players: For what it’s worth, even though you might have only played two years ago—Kelly Wiglesorth, Terry Deitz, and Jeff Varner were super kind and a joy to work with. And as a result, the energy here is really electric, because we want them to do well. We’re rooting for all 20. We know what it means to you. You hear guys like Savage or Jeremy say, “I need this!” They don’t just say, “I want to do it.” They need it. The difference between want and need is the difference between everything.

I agree that there’s definitely not the entitlement among this group that you felt with the first All-Stars cast, where those guys had been in movies and commercials and Nash Bridges or whatever. You don’t feel that with this cast.
Yeah, and as a result I feel the audience is going to root for them in a way that they haven’t before. And, obviously, the investment from the fans—you voted them in so you’ve got a rooting interest in who does well in this game. And I really like that. It proved to me that our audience is as loyal as I suspected for the last 15 years. Tens of millions of votes cast for their favorite players. Right on! We would definitely do it again and I would definitely turn it over. And I’ll tell you, a lot of friends of mine who are producers of television emailed me after the announcement and said “Are you out of your mind? You’re turning the entire cast?” And their emails would say things like, “I could see you doing one player. Or maybe one tribe. But 20 people?” And look at the cast we got: diversity in ethnicity, diversity in sexuality, in age, regional, everything.

Why does Kelley get all the hate online? I'm much more angry about people like Joe and Vytas getting on the show. Kelley seemed interesting in the brief glimpses the edit gave us of her, but Joe and Vytas never managed to be interesting despite the ample airtime they got. I thought Kelley and Dale were alright on the show but they've both been pretty awful post-show. They never shut up about Missy and Baylor and are constantly tweeting petty **** about them for no reason. Like, I don't doubt that Missy and Baylor rubbed people the wrong way on the island but 1) get over it 2) they probably barely remember you anyway.

For me personally, what I hate more is that she mustered up some random ass rabid fanbase on sites like RHAP and Reddit because she pretends to be a superfan (despite not knowing who Courtney Marit is) who was robbed because of an unfair tribe swap or something, when in reality she was just yet another generic bikini fodder early boot who wasn't that good at the game. A bunch of idiots have themselves convinced that she's some secret mastermind who needs a second chance literally only because she appears on RHAP somewhat often or something. Her inclusion on the preliminary poll, let alone on the actual show, makes no sense whatsoever and the fact that it's coming at T-Bird's expense is infuriating.

There are actually two big twists with the idols this season, the first of which is that every idol will look different. This could lead to more confusion among the contestants as to which idols are real and which are fake. Host Jeff Probst explained the idea behind it while speaking to EW on location for filming in May. “The first thing we’re doing with the idols is we’re making idols look different, so every idol will be unique,” says Probst. “One idol will look really fancy and the next idol will look like a 5-year-old made it. So when you get an idol, you’re going to have to convince somebody it’s real because they’re going to think it isn’t. But that also opens a door to make a fake idol … and they won’t know which is up and which is down. You can play all angles on this.”

While the look of the idols will be different, so will the location of where you can find them. For the first time ever, idols will hidden in the middle of challenges. Probst explains: “To get an idol you’re going to have to do something that you, Dalton Ross of Entertainment Weekly, have been pitching for years — along with us — which is hiding the idol in the middle of a challenge. So here’s how it will work: Day 1, they start building their shelter, you know people are going to start looking for an idol. They’re going to find it in a tree or under a trunk — whatever. But it will be a clue and the clue will say, ‘Good news, the idol is within reach. You just have to be daring enough to grab it.’ And we’re going to have a drawing [of the challenge]. You will know exactly where it is. There is no search. The only question is, can you do it in front of your tribe in the middle of a challenge and get away with it? I love that.”

CBS and Survivor producers picked 31 potential players to come back and play again in a Second Chance season (we’re not counting Mike Holloway as number 32, because he was always ineligible due to his win in Worlds Apart). From those 31, fans were able to vote in the 20 who ultimately made the cast. But what about people the network and show wanted back, but couldn’t get?

We asked host Jeff Probst about what players said “thanks, but no thanks” when asked to come back for another shot at the million dollars, and he mentioned four different contestants that turned down the opportunity.

“Greg Buis was someone we really wanted from season 1,” said Probst when we spoke to him on location on day one of filming for Survivor: Cambodia—Second Chance (which debuts Sept. 23). “[He] spoke on the coconut phone. And he wanted to do it, but he’d just been given this really great opportunity as the CEO of a nonprofit and he said, ‘I just can’t. I can’t take the job and leave.’”

So, no more coconut phone? Bummer. Who else was not in it to win it? “Jeff Kent was a guy that … he didn’t say no, but we said, ‘Look, we have to cut the list down. Are you in or are you out?’” explains Probst. “And he said, ‘You know, call me another time.’ So he was wishy-washy.”

Okay. Makes sense. The guy has enough money from Major League Baseball so certainly doesn’t need some more pocket change. But what about among women? “We would have loved to have had Elizabeth Hasselbeck back, but she said no many times.” Again, that makes sense. She certainly is no need of the money nor the camera time. Anyone else?

“RC, we wanted, and she didn’t want to play. And I understood. You know, RC came out to play Blood vs. Water and her dad got sick [so they had to pull out before filming] and I’ve heard enough Survivors tell me that the emotional journey is so strenuous that she just thought, ‘You’re going to put Abi on the list too and I don’t want to see her. Let’s just forget it.’ Maybe we can revisit RC another time and she’ll want to come back.” And perhaps in an Abi-less season, she will.

So going through a lot of the preseason stuff I just need to say that I'm shocked at how little Andrew Savage has changed since PI. I mean, I really shouldn't be, but I'm just astounded that he's exactly the same. His CBS video is just him talking about how he NEVER TOLD A LIE on his first season because that's just who he is as a human and he can't wait to align with Spencer and Joe and Jeremy and he's concerned about Kass, in a video about who people were surprised to see on he spent the whole time trashing Kimmi because what did she do other than have an argument about chickens (what did YOU DO, Andrew???), and his article on Parade.com contained the following epiphanies

A) that you have to treat everyone, even the unpopular kids, with respect
B) that he has absolutely nothing to learn from Sandra because she's under the radar and sucks in challenges and "that's just not him"
C) that he's relying on Survivor Wiki to learn about everyone and he's targeting Stephen literally only because his Wiki said that he's "strategic and devious"
D) that one of his biggest fears is for another Lill or Skinny Ryan to be on the show, presumably because he still doesn't know how to treat people he sees as beneath him with any sort of respect
E) that it took his wife to warn him to spend time with the Lills and not discount them and ignore them. Like, she literally had to tell him to not just hang out with the guys he would bro down with in real life like Joe and Terry (pretty much everyone he listed in his CBS interview) because the others will come back to bite him. Andrew Savage still hasn't come to terms with this possibility

He's exactly the same person as he was twelve years ago and it's frightening how little he has changed. Oh well, at least he gave us some pube action in his cast pic.
